The panel of Sally clenching her fist confused me at first, seeming like an overreaction, but an idea just struck me while rereading this page. It’s just conjecture and I could be overanalyzing things, but it seems consistent with how Gojira writes Sal.

She doesn’t like being referred to by her name because it is a reminder that she’s human, capable of mistakes and plagued by doubts and fears; as a leader, she feels that, for the sake of the community, she simply CANNOT have such things, that her person must be wholly swallowed up by her duty.

That she would have people refer to her as “Ms. Scrooge” rather than her title of “Mayor” seems at odds with this theory, admittedly. Then again, her actual last name (assuming this entire story is to some extent a metaphor for the actual SatAM characters) is one of royalty, therefore a title in itself with larger than life connotations.

In other words, she’s desperately trying to convince herself that she’s not Sally, an orphan girl in over her head, who in the darkest hours of the night is absolutely terrified that her own inadequacies will doom not only herself but all whom she loves, but An Acorn, member of a proud lineage of heroes who ruled with competence, valor, and strength.

For similar reasons, she refers to Rotor as “Mr. Cratchett” because she has come to believe that she cannot view the others as friends, that she must, for the sake of all, boil them all down to assets in order to maximize efficiency.

Quite a poignant thought experiment, really.
