Chapter 002 – Page 015

He just never learns..

So seeing as the all mighty Nagus is here I might as well ask this.

How do you think Nagus managed to escape The Void and not turn into a crystal?  Maybe he killed Sally’s father of and used the energy of his life to help escape?  Maybe he just found a key?   Well, what is your opinion on the matter? I know we already did a brief explanation in chapter 1, however I would like to know how YOU would have had him escape.

As always post your answer bellow or join the forums and post in the topic there.

See you next Friday for a whole new fun and exciting question.

Paul

… and then Antoine leaps into action!

  2. JayThree

Didn’t Nagus explained how he escaped the Void in Chapter 1 on pages 15 and 16?

…Unless the explanation was all just a lie.

Great story so far and good art too!

  3. dr.awesome

jaythree is right that was already explain
and I though we were gonna see who the cloaked figure was

  4. sonicblur13

i guess the moral of the story is NEVER TRUST PAUL!!!!

  5. Paul

It was all a lie. Nah I just want to know how you would have had him escape

I would have projected a field to try to mimic the more benign properties of the void to sustain Naugus, which might also explain how Snively’s able to control him. We know for a fact that its prolonged exposure to the Void that causes problems (Ari got in and out without any real adverse effects, and Sonic and Sally did the same). So maybe Snively found a way to make the environment of Robotropolis like the Void and the Freedom Fighters don’t notice because they don’t spend long enough in the city to catch the condition. For himself Snively’s new threads might be able to counteract the effect for himself, or maybe he’s got a personal field projector for himself in his belt buckle to keep him safe.

The crystals on Sonic’s legs look pretty good, though were I in Naugus’s shoes I might have taken a page out of Mephiles’s book and shot a spear of crystal through Sonic when he was off guard… or maybe caused the crystals on his legs to grow in such a way to actually break his bones so he couldn’t run. Of course there are limits to what you can get away with and still be considered for all ages, and both methods sound like they’re pushing the envelope. Is it just me or does it seem like Naugus needs the ground in order to use his crystal powers? Like he can’t just cause a crystal boulder to appear out of thin air in the sky above Antoine’s head?

  8. sonicblur13

that still doesnt answer my question

  9. John

    He’s hiding in Naugus’ beard.

  10. sonicblur13

I’d always thought of the area of “The Void” as a sort of radiation exposure thing, where the exposure is low enough that it doesn’t kill you outright, but messes you up enough over time that when you are no longer exposed to it you notice the effects. Thus, I would figure that a detox program would take care of things, but since so little was known about “The Void” by our heroes and villains, they didn’t know how to detoxify from the effects of “The Void”.

  12. sonicblur13

    yeah 😀

  13. CTM

Yeah, the old wizard did explain. Some gimmicky, technobabble explanation. Something about the power of the Doomsday Project giving him the means to ‘bypass’ the conventional means of traveling between the world of the Void and Mobius…which is supposedly the reason he turns to crystal.

Except that doesn’t explain why in “The Void” Sally’s father and Naugus start turning to crystal some time after they’d already been outside the Void (unless that’s the catalyst, as I’ll daftly postulate below), and it contradicts Naugus’ explanation in that episode that it was their time spent in the Void that caused it, which actually has some evidence supporting it considering that, y’know, Sonic and the gang don’t turn to crystal traveling between the two. Perhaps it’s a combination. Perhaps, if you put a gun to my head and ordered me to say something, I’d say the time spent in the Void gives those trapped there certain residual energy, or particles or whatever, that the wormhole or whatever the hell you want to call that purple hole in space they travel through reacts to? And slowly, since Naugus and Sally’s father spent a considerable amount of time on Mobius before crystallization? Yeah, it’s rather simplistic and possibly betrays a limited knowledge of physics, but the series is already rather soft on Moh’s Scale of Sci-Fi Hardness–even if it attempts to answer questions of this nature–so it’s not like the answers to those questions have to be entirely plausible. It’s better than retconning the contradiction presented to the reader/viewer, at any rate.

Hell, what am I talking about; it’s still technobabble. We’re still accepting the fact that Naugus used the technology of Robotnik’s invention to ‘teleport’ outside of the Void. He could be flat out lying, to serve some unknown purpose (although the comic suggests otherwise). It ultimately doesn’t matter…unless it’s a plot point. I would assume it is only because somewhere down the line he made contact with Snively (perhaps the act of teleporting put him directly in contact with him), and that, for some reason, Snively had the upper hand, hence the bargain struck between them that assured the little runt’s control in the relationship. Because Snively, like Robotnik, simply doesn’t have the means to do so innately. An agreement of sorts was reached between the two of them that, in essence, spells out that at the very least, Naugus needs Snively around, and in charge. (Because when it comes to the power dynamic, the ball is always in Naugus’ court unless something interferes with it; we’ve seen how powerful Naugus is. Technobabble or information are good examples of interference. Information walks a fine line since Naugus has the power to take what he wants through we’re calling ‘mind control’, though limited in that he still occasionally needs the cooperative services of others–like when he needed Robotnik to discover the Void to begin with–hence why he’s working with Snively. On the technobabble side, there’s the chance that Snively was responsible for Naugus’ being there and can revoke it at will.) Why? Perhaps he needs Snively’s technology to find the Chaos Emeralds. Perhaps he stretched the facts a little, and it was Snively who got him out (and Snively didn’t feel like contradicting him in front of Sonic). Perhaps Snively still has the power to send him back. Perhaps Naugus wants the Chaos Emeralds so that he can free himself from Snively’s MacGuffin. Who the hell knows. I’m already analyzing this to death, and most of you reading this probably skipped most of it since this paragraph is essentially a tangent, albeit one aimed at Paul’s reason for asking the original question. (You looking for ideas, chief?)

  14. Paul

Yeah. Well, its always good to understand what everyone thinks. That way we can get more ideas or thoughts into this whole process. I also find it interesting, all the different opinions and all.

  15. dr.awesome

that doesn’t answer who the cloaked figure is you have lie about telling us who he was for !st and last time

  16. sonicblur13

    yeah who is he

  17. RedPanda234

Personally, I liked Asher Tye’s idea of how Snively has control over Naugus. But if there was a field that mimiced the Void’s radiation, Naugus’d still have his full powers.

… and then Antoine leaps into action! [2]
Poor Ant got really freaked out. Want to see what happens next.

  18. Paul

I don’t have to tell you who the cloaked figure is. You will learn eventually in this chapter though.

  19. Asher Tye

The field probably wouldn’t perfectly mimic the Void’s radiation, just enough to keep Naugus from turning into something you’d find on the home shopping network. Of course, truth be told I haven’t seen him unable to do anything he did in his episode, so I’m really not sure he’s all that limited. Of course it may simply be the ambient energy of the Void that juices him up and on Mobius he just feels his age if he uses his powers to vigorously. That’d also explain his current interest in the Chaos Emeralds. I bet one of them would give him that ol’ pep again.

  20. RedPanda234

Now that you mention it, yeah.

  21. CTM

Asher Tye, your speculation about some sort of radiation is interesting–if I had to use some analogue to compare it to, it would be those particles from “Doomsday” in the season finale of the new era Doctor Who’s second series (something I was actually subconsciously thinking of when I gave my own theory). It stuck to people who’d traveled between universes. (Though it’s different in that it referred to those who traveled, not those from any particular universe.) In any case, Snively’s control in their relationship–to whatever degree it may be–is part of the equation, ultimately. The comic’s going to have to do some explaining on that eventually, assuming nothing’s retconned. Consider:

If Naugus wasn’t lying about how he got out of the Void, it will need to be explained how Snively managed to ensnare him. Because as it stands, we have no idea how a powerful wizard who got himself out of his own prison suddenly takes orders from him. That one scene at the end of “The Doomsday Project” makes it apparent that Snively had made contact with Naugus shortly before; perhaps literally right after the whole thing blew up thanks to Sonic and Sally. Did he teleport to that exact spot? Did Snively have something on hand with which to restrain him? (Doubtful, he was standing in an elevator amongst a pile of rubble. They weren’t even in Robotropolis proper, so any doohickeys lying around would have to be portable, if we’re going with the technobabble angle.) Had Snively been in contact with him for some time before Robotnik’s project was destroyed? (Speaking of which, where is Robotnik? Hurst says he was sucked into the Void; did Naugus just leave him there with the King? Assuming the King’s still there, too.) Perhaps they came to some sort of arrangement back then? Perhaps Naugus was paying attention to what was going on; he’s shown the ability to view Mobius from the Void before (which includes a video of Sally in Knothole [!] if you remember that early scene from “The Void”). It would make sense; how else would he be able to harness the energy of something if he didn’t know about it? (Yeah, in the comic he says the power from the machine “reached even into the Void!” but the guy would still have to have had some warning about what was happening to presumably make use of it so fast, I think.) It’s also possible Snively actually told him about the whole thing, possibly after he realizes everything’s starting to fall apart, if he had actually considered getting Naugus out for quite some time.

It’s understandable if none of this is relayed right now. That’s part of what makes good storytelling. But assuming how things will eventually turn out, and the necessity of one of the plot points (Snively’s “deal” with Naugus), it will have to be eventually, in some form. (Hell, it would be in the Freedom Fighters’ own best interest to find out, since the wizard is so powerful.) I’m just curious to see how it’s actually handled, considering the established canon and Hurst’s own remarks. (And it’s good to ask questions; it keeps writers thinking.) Perhaps we’ll get some more backstory on him too, eh? Like how he met Robotnik to begin with, and how they came across the Void? Or where he was before the takeover–hopefully ignoring the excesses of the Archie comics in the process.

  22. Asher Tye

I imagine even with planning and the power of the DP Stones that destroyed Doomsday, escaping the Void was a bit like trying to swim to shore during a storm. Its quite possible Snively found Naugus at his weakest and made him a deal, a place to recover in exchange for his services. If the old wizard is something of a lawful evil type, he’d have to keep his word. Unfortunately there’s just so little we know about Naugus (beyond the fact that he seems to have the same bad judgment of people King Acorn had) that we really can’t tell what’s compelling him to be on Snively’s side. But you have a very good point, CTM, in that it would be in the FF’s best interests to break that bond.

Maybe Robotnik and Naugus got accidentally merged as they crossed paths on the way in/out of the Void?

  23. Kate Vunza

“And then Ant leaps into action”? Much as I’d like to see that, my money’s on Ant attempting to leap OUT of the action.

Assuming “Courage the Cowardly Coydog” doesn’t pass out on the spot… although he DID show some gumption in Season 1’s “Hooked on Sonics”…

    Lovin’ this series.

  24. sonicblur13

hey every i just got back from a family reunion!!!

  25. dmoney

I am actually working on a fanfic for the events after doomsday, and trying to follow Ben Hurst’s plot where Snively takes over, then Naugus, and Snively goes to the FFs. I came up with a theory on how Naugus got out the Void and how Snively can control him…
According to my story, Naugus escaped by using all the energy from the explosion at the doomsday site. He was able to convert the energy to speed in order to boost through the portal with enough speed, just like Sonic can run through because he is fast enough. In return, Robotnik’s hovercraft was sucked into the portal and Robotnik ends up in the Void with a very angry King Acorn. Naugus escapes but still has the problem of turning to crystal.

Snively had developed a potion that will enable somebody to live on Mobius after being in the Void extensively. He had been secretly working on this potion for years as he would sneak off to study the Void’s atmosphere and test the chemicals in his secret lab. But it was only a temporary formula. After about a week, the formula would wear off and you would need to return to the Void or die. Snively knew that he could create a permanent formula, but why would he? He knows that as soon as Naugus was rid of his crystal problem, Naugus would betray and probably kill him. So he made a deal to issue a new formula to Naugus every week in exchange for his services. If Naugus broke the deal, all he’d have to do is refuse to make a potion. And we all know how Naugus really doesnt know anything about science and technology, so no way he can make this potion himself.

Here’s my idea on how the story’s going on:

After the Doomsday Project went KABOOM, Robotnik’s pod was flinged into the Great Unknown. Naugus then opened the portal and trapped Robotnik inside. With an two angry people at him, one with magical powers, my guess he won’t be happy. Snively escapes the Project, and goes back up once it’s destroyed. Naugus gets out of the Void, BUT at the last second, King Acorn hangs onto him. Now the King and Naugus are in the Great Unknown. Naugus uses a spell to erase the King’s memories and disguses him with a cloak. But having been in the Void for a long time, later he senses Void energy coming from Robotropolis, so he heads over there.

Meanwhile, Naugus heads over to Robotropolis to confront Snively. Naugus says that he needs help. We don’t know what he needed help with, but Snively agreed, in return for his services. And so Episode 1 happens.

Is it just me or does Nargus have a Joker smile in the last panel?

  28. new FUS follower

    my idea:

Nagus already found one of the emeralds, the ice emerald(i know he didnt mention any ice emerald, because he is keeping him for his own goods).- he is using his own ice emerald to make his magic outside the void more powerful and he used his emerald to bend the fabric of space and time in his own way, a much direct and larger one…* diferent from the original robotnik’s portal that is inefficient and drains life* as you pass through.
he found the ice emerald deep in The Void, where it was prfect hidden from thoes who wold use it with all oather emeralds(all emeralds together) to abuse the power to harm oathers…

so yea, that’s one of my ideas.

ps: srry for my gad grammar, i am going to work on it..

  29. um

Why does Antoine have a cameltoe?

  30. Quickster

    Nagus, Naugus, what’s the difference?
