 James Avery, the character actor who laid down the law as the Philip Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died.

Avery's publicist, Cynthia Snyder, told The Associated Press that Avery died Tuesday in Glendale, Calif., following complications from open heart surgery. He was 65.

Avery played Will Smith's uncle on the popular TV series. His movie credits included Fletch, The Prince of Egypt and 8 Million Ways to Die.

"I'm deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away," tweeted actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton on Fresh Prince. "He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly."

I didn't know his name in the show. Haven't watched that much. All I know is that Uncle Phil loves turkey with pillowy mounds of mashed potatoes, butter drenched dressing and tiny onions swimming in a sea of cream sauce.

No you didn't. You said he was throwing Will Smith when he was throwing somebody who wasn't even played by Will Smith.

To be fair, I didn't know this either, and the hairstyle looks more like Will Smith's in the show (unless Jazz changed hairstyles at some point). The outfit is Jazz's, though.

Yes I did. The only reason I said Will Smith was becuase I didn't know Jazz's name. Had I known, I would've said that instead, because I'm that neurotic.
