They did in an episode he met Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.
There's a difference between doing something for a short time in one episode for plot-related reasons, and fundamentally altering a character's design for the hell of it.
but from a marketable point of view you also want these characters to be appealing to the modern audiences
How does giving Sonic blue arms increase his appeal? Giving him green eyes and longer spines and shoe buckles made sense from that perspective. Giving him blue arms does not.

2) you really don't know how people will react without a test, and even then sometimes it doesn't go the way you thought it would.

Maybe. But you still don't go around changing characters everyone knows and loves for no reason. What if one day they decided Bugs Bunny should be green?
Jazz Jackrabbit might object to that
Bucky O'Hare called, he wants his color scheme back.
"The Devil Inside is the new scam from director William Something Something. The movie stars actors and was edited on a computer. Somewhere. This movie is the latest film in a series of very low budget films designed to look like real movies! And be released in theaters to make a quick buck via a horribly off kilter budget to profit ratio that the general public seem to be stupidly unaware of! These films use to be called 'direct to video' but now they are called 'first run features'. These films then vanish from the theaters, like a rapist leaving the scene of a crime." - Mike Stoklasa of RedLetterMedia

I've heard from various sources that this would be separate from the current sonic and be a more westernized version.
Could it be?

Although, I highly doubt I'm the only one who thought of this idea. In fact I've mentioned that something similar to this was tried in the early days. In fact that that's what gave me the idea, even though it's not entirely mine.
A petition to keep up to a third of the characters in the sonic comics from being lost forever.

To those who want to give this "new direction" a chance, don't say I didn't warn you.

I don't think it is quite the same.
I think what we have here is a new canon like Sonic X or Archie, that just also happens to be getting a game. It's close, a step in that direction, but not there yet.

I'm still not to keen on the 6-11 rating. I mean I understand what target audiences are, but (though this might be one of Sonic's major issues) Sonic never really seemed to have a target audience. Hence the usual Everyone ratings.

I think they fail to realize that

Heck, some of their influences for the new series were shows like "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" and "Phineas and Ferb"; shows targeted towards younger children, but also attracted adult audiences in the process.
Let's just hope the show doesn't develop a "brony-like" fallowing that could potentially ruin its reputation.

That better not happen...

It's okay...but I felt it was too forced for a laugh.

My favorite part about that commercial is how Amy doesn't haven't a speaking line.
Knuckles's line was also pretty good.

I believe that was the joke. Eggman is trying to emphasize just how much of a villain he is by adding the word "evil" to everything, even if it's just ordinary food.
If anything, this new depiction of Eggman is reminding me of Dr. Doofenshmirtz from "Phineas and Ferb"; a mad scientist who tries way too hard to be a threat, but doesn't succeed all that much.
