Sorry i had to, Its just i agree with Yuji Naka's motion: Sonic will NEVER be with Amy.

 

One thing i see is that they go from (Sonic for example) to the care-free adventurous type to the worrysome guy. I understand he can show concern at times but to go to the opposite of what they should be

I see Sonic as pretty individualistic fellow that let's people make their own mistakes and only meddles with their decisions if they are immediately dangerous to themselves or others (especially so). He is very opinionated but he won't waste his time preaching at people when he could just dust them off and say "now you know, kiddo." He seems to be the type that has a good taste in character and therefore trusts his friends not to  screw up in their decisions in the first place. If a person wants to write Sonic, they must remember he is both laidback and faternal to others. I am sure if I came to Sonic looking for his advice he'd be quick to give it and be very invested in what I had to say, but he'd probably finish his wry and witty little speech with an "Alright, I said my piece. Cheerish or trash it, what you do with it is your own problem. Good luck, kid.  And oh for the love of all things holy, don't tell Amy I'm here. I'm on a date."

What do you see people commonly getting wrong with portraying official characters? And how could they avoid it?

1) If you go in the Sprite Comic direction, people always reduce the intellect of the main characters (usually Sonic).  While this works for most Sprite Comics, it's done to death and wasn't all that funny to begin with.  

 

2) Relationship Maturity - Sonic is 15ish.  He shouldn't be "doing it" with anyone yet.  Tails is what 10?  8?  Seriously, guys, if you're at least going to have "adult themes" in your story, make the characters at least 18.  Otherwise things get awkward.

 

3) Not giving characters a reason to be there - Many times fan fictions try to use official characters only to get readers.  If you don't need Shadow to be there, don't waste your time writing for him.  It just takes away from other characters, and usually causes fans to not read your story as their favorite character just kind of stands there like a bump on a log.  Like most do in the games.  Stupid SEGA.

Not to be Pro SonAmy, but I'm noticing a double standard here. 

 

Many of us on FUS have no quarrel with Sonic being in a relationship with Sally, however heaven forbid anyone pair up Sonic and Amy or worse Sonic and Elise.  And the reasoning usually cited?  Sonic "is too carefree/adventurous" to settle down and have a relationship.

 

Yet isn't that what he'd be doing with Sally?  Why does it rub us the wrong way to see other relationships?  

 

Just for a minute, ignore all the other reasons we don't like SonAmy, and only focus on that one reason.  Why is it okay for SonSal but not SonAmy? 

 

The truth is, it isn't.  You can't justify approval of SonSal but claim SonAmy is outta character because of Sonic's "carefree/adventurous" nature.  If he isn't going to accept one for that reason, he wound't accept the other.  Honestly Sally isn't any more adventurous or out going then Amy.  

 

Now I'm not saying you have to like SonAmy or SonElise (whatever that's called), I mean there are tons of other reasons why they are bad choices, but claiming it's in character to be in a relationship with Sally but not to be in with one of them is just being stubborn and a bit foolish.  If Sonic's personality prevents him from wanting to hook up, that would in turn mean that he wouldn't wanna hook up with Sally either.

SatAM Sonic is a fundamentally different character than his Sega counterpart. Though confident and irreverent, he is far from carefree, having spent most of his life in the shadow of a terrible evil after almost all that he knew was taken from him. He hides it well enough, but at his core he's still a scarred individual, one scared of losing those he has left and willing to put himself in harm's way so that doesn't happen. Yet every step of the way, Sally has been with him, has borne those same hardships. That's an incredibly strong foundation for a believable and compelling relationship.

Ah but here we're talking about a Fan Fiction describing a world that in theory would have both Sally and Amy (or Elise or both), and not SatAM Sonic (to an extent).  Even if he's based on SatAM Sonic, he can't deny Amy on the grounds that he's too Adventurous/Carefree to be in a relationship without also denying Sally.  If he's too adventurous to settle down, he ain't settling down, don't matter who with.

The Fangirl thing is one of the reasons I originally didn't like the idea of the SonAmy pairing.  If Amy would drop being more obsessed than Kathy Bates' character in "Misery", I could see the two getting together eventually...but only in the Sega, Fleetway, or X continuities.  And THERE'S where the situation on characterization gets a little sticky...since we have to consider WHICH continuity we're using...

With eight different official continuties, this has a potential for eight specifically different ways the main characters can be depicted.  Hell...just look at Sonic in all eight and you'll see eight different personalities ranging from caring protector in SatAM to outright jerkwad in Fleetway.  It gets even stickier if writers combine continuities, like Sean Catlett did with "Sonic Sketchy" or I did with Arcadia-Mobius.

 

Again, I think it just depends on the skill of the writer...but the writer still has to have a good grounding on the characterization of the continuity(ies) he/she is using.

As far as I heard, he said he didn't want to have Sonic tied down by any relationship.

And even so, it isn't out of Sonic's character to fall for Amy. And even so, it isn't out of Sonic's character to fall for Amy. While it is rather unpopular here, in many continuities including the games, where Sonic has dropped everything to rescue Amy, even facing his own fears to do so, while not doing the same for others, at least not without resistance. There has also been times where he has, again even in the games, gone out with Amy.

 

 

 Personally in my work, EoT, I still put this aforementioned issue on the table as conflict in Sally and Sonic's relationship. My Sonic is Satam's Sonic, but the issue still is adressed for an obvious reason...well I'll let Blue speak for himself. Check out this scene where he is stuck with Bunny in an old radio tower as the Hoverbots patrol the perimeter.

Don't get me wrong Bunnie I lo -"

 

Bunnie's ears darted up straight like two antennas. Her aquamarine eyes beaming with a wondered shock. Sonic winced, rapidly covering his tracks. Great job, 'nic, last thing you need is to say the L-Word in front of chatty Bunnie. Get any more mushy-gushy with the ole mouth, and everybody will think you've gone softer than Antoine. Before you know it you'll be readin' Sal "phoum's" in a goofy accent. Sonic cleared his throat. " I like Sally," he recovered carefully, keeping his tone as smooth an nonchalant as possible. "But I don't like her title. Ya got me?"

 

 "You don't like the idea of being Prince Sonic ?" Bunnie tilted her head, curious and sniffling. Her eyes narrowed  into teary, suspicious slits. 

 

"Whoa Bunnie!" He waved his hands in front of her. "Too soon to talk like that, way too soon!"

 

 She shrugged off his intensity with a coy giggle. She took another sip of her drink, savoring it. The tangy drink seemed to rebolster her spirits a bit (that, and her deliberate tease). "You know it's the direction you're headin'," She said between smacks of her soured lips. "You ain't got the royal blood to be king, but that still gives you -"

 

"A whole lot to handle," Sonic finished before her. "I'm not royal material you know..." 

 Bunnie waved off his words with a bend of her wrist. "Neither was the Queen when she started out. She wasn't rich or, or famous, or anything like that." Bunnie bowed forward in her seat and jammed it against the scant fur of Sonic's chest. "King Maxmillian loved her because of her heart. And because she cared for her people. And if there is anybody here that has cared for his fellow Mobians, I'd reckon it'd be you." 

 

 Sonic tried to look thankful and cheered up. "Thanks Bunnie," he said, straightening up from his slouch in his seat.

 

"But I'm no Queen Nicole, I don't got her brains. And, truth be told..." 

 

 Bunnie lifted her metal hand, signaling him to be quiet. Her eyes scanned him up and down, pensively. She was reading him, reading his features like they were a book of clues.  "You don't wanna be Prince Sonic. You want to do what yha want, when yha want to do it. Don't you?"  

 

 Sonic squirmed a bit in his seat suppressing the desire to bolt up and dash fifty miles away, at the risk of alerting half an army of Stealth Bombers his way. "Alright," he admitted softly, almost in a whisper. "You got me there, Bunnie."  

 

How it all pans out? Welp, that's something I don't even know. I am just letting it all happen from the perspective of the characters. I know the plot, but the characters act, in a sense, I let the characters act according to their own will.

 We are about to start our first community project for the Fan-Fic The Coalition. We are all going to build a giant character template and design an original character. One of the biggest flaws in most fan-fiction is in the area of Original Characters. This sheet is not going to just challange people to flesh out their characters, but force the user to think about their characters weaknesses, potential narrative conflicts, and overall depth as a character.
