Other M?
This is Sonic we're talking about, not Metroid.
Long before the Metroid Other M, and before Ian Flynn wrote for Archie, he wrote a Sonic the Hedgehog Fan Comic on Sonic-Verse Team called Other M (I think it stood for Other Mobius).
And if you were being Sarcastic.....*slaps VHS*
Anyways...said this about Other M in another topic....
Just for the record, I never liked Other M. While I agree the new main cast was a nice touch, and it had a really in depth story with amazing characterization, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't like that Two of my favorite characters were turned evil (Knuckles and Tails) without good reason (Miles was just evil. Period. And Knuckles's reasonings were limited at best), and too often the Comic felt that Everyone was on the run. Part of the Charm of SatAM is even though the heroes were at the disadvantage, their victories seemed to mean something. Other M seemed to focus the other way, victories were fleeting, and the defeats seemed to have more lasting effects. Also everybody died. A lot. And I know sometimes you can't make a comic without killing a few X-Men, but back to the victories scenario, the deaths ALWAYS felt wasted. Bark dies saving people...but achieves relatively nothing. Robotnik dies trying to save the team, Bean dies anyways. In fact the original outcome was everyone died so they sent Sonic home, just for him to use Zonic to cheat and fix everything (hey...Ian was retconing back then too). Now again, I'm not saying it was BAD, in fact it was really good for a fan story, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Just had to get that outta the way.
So to expand on it:
Knuckles and Tails are my two favorite game Characters (Robotnik used to be up there but he keeps being done not intimidating enough). As much fun as it is to see alternate universes of them, making them the major villains for the longest time was a big dislike for me. Specifically since Knuckles's evil was more over stupidity that seemed a bit overkill, and Tails was just PURE evil which was never really ever explained.
Also everyone dies without meaning. I know in real life people sometimes die for no rhyme or reason, but when characters are just randomly killed off (and one was brought back) you're going all X-Men for the wrong reasons. Bark was killed of sacrificing himself for the team, but other than killing Bark off, it didn't seem to do anything for anyone. Robotnik pretends to be evil and double crosses the team only to turn around to try and save everyone last second and gets killed, and Bean was still killed when he was doing that. Also Bean, being the leader, had a dramatic death, yet all it did was open the position for Sonic to take charge, which ended up with everyone dead and Sonic being sent back home, just to do a SUPER RETCON MOMENT. And after that Bean was Magically brought back from the dead anyways.
When characters die, I wanna feel they had some sort of lasting effect on the rest of the team. Even if it's just sadness that they died. Otherwise you might as well made be using the Clone Troopers from Star Wars because Nobody feels bad when they die.
Also on that same note, nothing ever seemed to get better for the team. Rather than feeling like the were improving situations (like in Archie Sonic and SatAM) it continually felt like things were growing steadily worse for them. I'd like to see progression. Instead it's Really Bad and then suddenly WE WON!
Also....I never quite understood what "Part Two" was about after Mighty defected onto the team. But at that time when I was reading it many of the pages were missing, didn't load properly, or just flat out didn't work. Then it kinda died around Boomer's death so....
Now I don't HATE the comic. I did at first but I have to admit I did read it all the way through, the character's personalities were interesting and well put together, and it was a well thought out and developed change to the Sonic universe. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
