Though that does beg the questions about Eggman's Parents and if he has any siblings.  Considering Maria is also Gerald's Grandchild, is Maria Eggman's Cousin, sister, what?

Chao are another species that inhabits the planet of Earth (game wise) just like Humans and the Anthro-Animals.  Their deity is Chaos so presumably they have a relation to the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald.  The were considered the original Guardians of the Emeralds, though really they could do nothing to protect it.

Judging from Chaos having the ability to change form and shape and how the animals affect them, Chao likely have the ability to adapt to their surroundings by taking on the traits of the local wildlife.  Sometime their physical appearance alters as well (example their heads change shape based on what abilities are their highest).  

 

Also considering how bubbly the Chao are in Sonic Adventure and the fact that Chaos is a living liquid, it's possible that Chao aren't a completely solid being.  This also would explain why they can resist being thrown and can take quite a wallop to the face (though too much of that does eventually kill them).

Never got to play Sonic Advance 3 multiplayer, I didn't know that.  But that also supports the theory that Chao can undo the change later as well, as Cheese has been seen in later games as a regular Chao.

One theory is that the moon's shifted weight has changed it's rotation only giving it the illusion that it's fixed.  Alternatively it's possible through the power of the chaos emeralds the moon was somehow fixed. 

 

Funny enough that rotation thing  is the answer two senior members of sonic team gave at sonic boom 2013 when someone asked that question

Too simple. This game was meant to be something epic. I have heard so many speak about such. If you could learn that something was to be...you would be sitting on creative gold mine. There is also always the benifit of learning from other's mistakes in writing, that was you don't make them as well, and better yet know how to get right what the writers got wrong. Every story can be improved and ultimately redeemed. Let's look at the plot and salvage some of it's intresting concepts first.
