Why can't Sonic get some cosmetic changes? Throw some clothes on him, see how the fans shit themselves.

Sonic did wear an Indiana Jones outfit in issue 67.

Shadow probably means on a more permanent scale.
"The Devil Inside is the new scam from director William Something Something. The movie stars actors and was edited on a computer. Somewhere. This movie is the latest film in a series of very low budget films designed to look like real movies! And be released in theaters to make a quick buck via a horribly off kilter budget to profit ratio that the general public seem to be stupidly unaware of! These films use to be called 'direct to video' but now they are called 'first run features'. These films then vanish from the theaters, like a rapist leaving the scene of a crime." - Mike Stoklasa of RedLetterMedia

A jacket with flame designs would look good. Modify the shoes to something new.
Give Tails an avian design, with goggles and scarf.

I think "cosmic changes" only affect more minor characters. Sonic's design is iconic, so any changes will probably be minimal. It's kinda like how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stay relatively the same in appearance, while their master Splinter gets different redesigns in every incarnation.
But if you're curious for a different take at Sonic, search for Nicky the Hedgehog.

It may be weird, but it's based on the early Japanese canon. In the series, Sonic is a dorky little hedgehog named Nicky (Nikky) who is possessed by an unbound spirit that guided fighter pilots to safety (hence the emblems seen in the early games). Whenever trouble arises, Nicky enters a fit of rage and transforms into Sonic the Hedgehog. He even hangs out with human girls, has fangs, and plays in a rock band like his early concept art.
Looks like the American canon wasn't the only one scrapped by Sega.

Sorta. But instead of smashing everyone, he's more mischievous (like his AoStH depiction).
In one issue, Nicky and Emi (a prototype of Amy Rose) are getting bullied by Anton Brooke (a local punk lizard thug) in a pizza shop. Once Sonic is unleashed, he resorts to stealing Anton's pizza slice (causing him to chomp his own fingers), throws him into a batch of pizza dough, places him inside a blazing hot oven, then tosses him out across the ocean like a frisbee!
Sheesh... Makes today's Sonic look like a saint...

I've never read it so I wouldn't know. But From what I gathered it's pretty weird. But I can see where the Japanese Audiences would be saying the same about Archie and SatAM too.

Nothing too weird... Just a post-apocalyptic world where dinosaurs became gods, echidnas became a technologically-advanced race of guardians, and a prehistoric mammoth gained immortality and reality-altering magic powers through a mystical stone embedded in its chest. Not to mention a robotic mad scientist from an alternate reality taking his former counterpart's place, a wrathful demigod of destruction that possesses various echidnas, an elderly wizard with a magical computer, and a band of royal siblings carrying magical instruments that double as powerful weapons.

And robots that turn their hands into fucking PUMPKINS AND WOMEN.
I excluded AoStH because the whole series is one big WTF. Picking anything from that series would be like cheating. Not to mention the final episode revealed the entire series was fictional anyway.
I mentioned Lazaar and the Sonic Underground because their series are part of the Archie continuity; SatAM possibly being Robo-Robotnik's original universe and "Underground" being part of the multiverse along with "Sonic X", the OVA, and the Fleetway series (according to Ian Flynn).
