I think it's been explicitly stated that there was influence from the comics. Whether or not they actually wanted to make an adaptation of the comic, though, is anybody's guess.

I think it was more along the lines of wanted to base off the comics but were told not to.

After all this, do you really think that Archie would even WANT to? Or Sega, for that matter? 

 

Would be nice if they did, mind you, I just don't see why they would after this entire wretched incident.

My best guess is the settlement basically gives Ken the Echidna characters since those are the ones he mainly wants so he can do his comic. In exchange for them, Archie gets to keep other characters Ken had a hand in creating, like Leeta and Lyco and Ken also backs down from demanding royalites to all the reprinted material. We know Ken tried to block the sales of the 3rd Knuckles Archives book, but I don't recall hearing anything about him attempting that with the 4th.

 

Perhaps depending that if his comic book fails, he might be willing to let Archie reuse them. Either that or be a complete douchebag milkshake and then refuse to let them use the characters. If he can't have them, then nobody can!

I, myself loved the echidna characters, Julie-Su especially.  Now knowing that she may be gone, along with alot of other characters makes me wonder, how are theygoing to re-write the storyline, especially the fact that Ixis took over St. John's body

Well, he hasn't taken all the characters (...yet), so the comic still has plenty of material to work with. Penders might've taken claim of Anti-Sonic and Robo-Robotnik, but thanks to some pre-editing, we still have Scourge and Eggman. Not to mention Geoffrey isn't technically "Geoffrey" anymore with Naugus now possessing his body.

 

Also, we still have Mina Mongoose, Monkey Kahn, Fiona Fox, Tails' family, Mammoth Mogul, the Destructix, the Downunda/Artic/Fathom Freedom Fighters, Sand Blasters, and tons of others. Add that up with the cast of SatAM, the official Sega cast, and all of Ian's origonal characters, and you still have a rich list of colorful characters.

 

Yeah, it's a shame we won't be seeing Geoffrey or Lien-Da again anytime soon (especially since they were starting to get good), but least the comic hasn't been pulled. Without it, we would only have the games... And we know how they've been lately...

Well honestly if it's just the Echidna Characters I can live with it.  While I'll Miss Remmington and KneeCaps, most of the Echidna Characters only played minor roles in the Sonic the Hedgehog Comic.  Only during the Knuckles the Echidna Comic did they really do anything other than be a small time reference in a Knuckles themed ark.

 

Though on the downside does that mean we lost characters such as Enerjak, Dimitri, Mongul, the Hunter guy....whazhisname?, and other Knuckles Comic Villain?  Because Fighting Robotnik day in and day out gets monotone and honestly I liked Scourge better as Evil Sonic.  While Mongul is annoying, it's still nice to see Knuckles Themed Villains from Time to Time.

Which begs the question, what do other characters like the Substitute Freedom Fighters and Geoffrey St. John have to contribute? I can understand the Acorn family since they have a connection to the Echidnas, but what's the point in keeping them around when Sally herself is not included?

Technically most of Penders Freedom Fighter Group Characters were based off of backgorund characters in SatAM.  So arguably they may not be taken but since he developed all the personality and name for them maybe.

 

Also taking the Non-Knuckles Group Characters seems pointless.  Most Hardly interacted to begin with and as you said they don't have a connection.  It would actually be better for him to just make new characters for Lara to interact with, Specifically since most of these characters would be OLD now anyways.

Oh, it gets worse. To quote Dr. Eggman: "Get a load of this."

 

When Mike K and I co-created Evil Sonic and Robo-Robotnik, nothing like those characters existed in the games. They weren't based on Sonic or Robotnik per se as far as personality and purpose went. And that's the key here. Both characters are depicted as clear individuals in the same panels with their original version, thus establishing them as clear and distinctly different characters. The equivalent here is Spawn/Midieval Spawn. When Robo-Robotnik becomes the new Eggman, it isn't done off-panel. Neither is Evil Sonic's transformation into Scourge. My characters are literally shown being given makeovers and a name change, thus they have no degree of separation from being my characters. Had Ian established Scourge as a separate character apart from Evil Sonic, then the character is out of bounds to any claims of mine. But that didn't happen, and there's no retconning to correct this after the fact.

Which brings us to Shade and the other characters from SONIC CHRONICLES which many have claimed were based on my characters. The reason many people have made this observation is that my characters - Julie-Su, the Dark Legion, Dimitri, the Brotherhood, etc. - all existed prior to the game, which provided not only a basis for comparison, but a basis for the very existence of these elements within the game. Shade by herself without the back story provided in the game more than likely could have possibly been considered a stand-alone original character. However, once you add the other elements from the game including her back story that track with the elements I created, then you have reasons for the actions I've taken.

People have tended to get hung up on the visuals of a character rather than the purpose they serve within a story, which is what makes them copyrightable in the first place. If I had never established the world of Evil Sonic in the first place, then Ian might have clear title to the "Anti-Brotherhood". But like Sega and BioWare/EA, Ian runs into two problems: (1) I did establish the world of Evil Sonic with the "anti-" versions of the characters and (2) I was also responsible for the creation of the Brotherhood of the Guardians, thus Ian was basing characters off of my work rather than creating his own.

When Karl created Mina and Finetivus, he created two unique and distinctly different characters. I never laid claim to Finetivus even though he was an echidna because that part never mattered where the character itself was concerned. Take away the visual of him being an echidna and he's a uniquely different character from anything I've created.

There are so many things wrong with this. For one thing, if what he says about Scourge still being the Anti-Sonic he created is true, it seems he's trying to claim ownership of Dr. Eggman as well.

 

Also by his logic, he shouldn't be able to use Lara-Su's father. Even if he changes him, he would still be derivative of Knuckles and not a character in his own right.
