I don't know about this map, but i do know that THIS is an official map of Mobius (page taken from Sonic Comic Encyclopedia):
Hey Alex, I noticed the white continent in your attached map looks sorta like South America, look:

Whoever designed the map most likely thinks Mobius is future Earth and based it on that.
An very rare photo of the late singer Aaliyah next to a statue of Sonic...
Now that is "One In A Million!"

Actually all the contenants look like Earth's continents. Hence they're parody names.
True...like Downunda is based off Australia cause of its colloquialistic name Downunder

In fact, this is exactly it! According to the story in Sonic Archie, Mobius is the Earth but thousand of thousand of years after the end of our era.

Well, it is the Archie comic canon. It's already been established that Mobius was a future Earth.
Heck, nearly every Sonic continuity takes place on a post-apocalyptic/alternate Earth.
Here's the map of the SegaSonic Earth as seen in "Shadow the Hedgehog":

The planet is still called Earth, but the continents are unlike ours. That explains the continents seen in "Sonic Unleashed".
As for the whereabouts of South Island, Westside Island and the rest, that's anyone's guess.

Personally I always like to think of Mobius as a completely separate planet.

South Island is the large landmass up to the north....duh.
Personally I always like to think of Mobius as a completely separate planet.
I highly doubt a landmass that big would be considered an island.
As for the "Mobius being a seprate planet" scenario, that's been done in both "Sonic X" and the Fleetway comics. Oddly enough, they both share a similar backstory; where they were once part of Earth until some ancient cataclysm split them into two planets. One remained while the other drifted into a seprate dimension.
Either way, this explains how there are many similarities between our world and theirs. I mean, how can animals and plants similar to our own evolve on a separate world? If Sonic is an alien, there'd be no reason to call him a hedgehog.
Least, that's my opinion...

As far as i know, the name of the planet was never officially state in any game. We usually assume that this is Earth because of the ressemblance.

They address it as Earth several times in SA2, "Shadow the Hedgehog", and "Sonic Unleashed".

When? I know Sonic mention the planet as ''as cool and blue as me''. But beside that, i don't remember any moment when anyone ever mention it as being ''Earth''.

I hear them say Planet a bunch of Times in SA2, but never Earth directly
Eggman: Citizens of Earth, lend me your ears! Listen very closely...
Maria: Shadow, what do you think it's like on Earth?
Amy (recap): Something horrible has happened; Professor Gerald activated his program a long time ago. Activating that program has caused the Space Colony to fall out of its orbit. Now it's on a crash course to the Earth!
Rouge: I just received a message from my boss... The Space Colony ARK, is currently approaching Earth at an incredible velocity. It probably... will impact Earth...
Gerald: This is a death sentence for every human being on Earth. If my calculations are correct, the Space Colony ARK will impact the Earth in twenty-seven minutes, twenty-three seconds. All of you will be destroyed, along with your beloved planet Earth.
There you have it. There are other times Earth is mentioned throughout the game, but these are the ones I can name at the top of my head.

I take a look to confirm, and indeed, they actualy used the name ''Earth''. I wonder why it give me no impression on me. Maybe it's because it can be used so loosely.
That bring me to the next big question: What in the hell is the Sonic world, according to the ''Japanese'' interpretation?

As I said, it appears to be an alternate Earth. It's sorta like Pokémon; an Earth where Mobians (and other bizzare creatures) live alongside Human beings.
I mean, where on our world would you find bizzare locations like Green Hill, Angel Island, Frog Forest, Mazuri, and such?

Well, what i mean was what is really the ''standard'' Sonic world? In the earliest game, it seem to be some kind of fictionnal world that is no way relate to Earth. But then, the Sonic game for the Dreamcast take a totally different approach. This version of Sonic world look way different than in the Genesis games. What used to be a cartoony world is now a more realistic world. After that, it became more confusing. Sonic Unleashed seem to take place in a pixar world, then Sonic Sonic Colors which don't even take place in a specific world anymore. Let's not even forget the dreadful Sonic Rider game, which take place in a futuristic world or somerhing. Heck, the first and second Rider game don't even look the same world at all. In Sonic Rider 1, the world look like a high-tech city, then in Sonic Rider Zero Quality, oups, i mean Gravity, the world look like a city in Corusant. Are we in Star Wars now or what? All these place don't seem to match in the same planet at all. It's not just about being in a different place, but more like they don't share the same artistic style at all. Realistic place here and cartoony place over there.
In comparaison, imagine the earliest game that look more cartoony, than look the newer game, that look more realistic. It doesn't fit togheter all that well.

Honestly, I didn't find the Dreamcast era that different from the genesis games. SA1 and SA2 had surreal zones like Windy Valley, Twinkle Park, Sand Ocean, and Pumpkin Hill. And "Sonic Heroes" was packed full of genesis-style zones.
Also, "Sonic Riders" wasn't the first game to depict a futuristic city (its called Monopole). "Sonic CD" had multible futuristic-looking zones, "Sonic Chaos" had Gigalopolis, and "Sonic Heroes" had Grand Metropolis/Power Plant and Casino Park/Bingo Highway.

You can say the same for "The Legend of Zelda" series. "The Wind Waker" takes place in the same universe as the rest of the series, but it has a different art style to differentiate it from other games. The same can be said for "Yoshi's Island".
Yes, true. But at least in the Zelda game, the story tie them together, which it's not the case in Sonic games.
