Lately, I've been planning a map of Mobius/Earth as it appears in the games. We all know the planet sports many different zones and landscapes, but where do they all fit?

Evidence
* South Island is the homeland of Sonic as he grew up. This is where both "Sonic 1" for the Genesis and GameGear take place, and the GameGear version of the game features a map of the island.

* "Sonic 2" for the GameGear features a similar-looking zone titled "Green Hills Zone", hinting that it's the same zone. Likewise, Mecha Green Hill Zone in "Sonic Chaos" is a roboticized version of Green Hill Zone created by Dr. Eggman. South Island and Canyon Cruise in “Sonic the Fighters” also take place near Green Hill Zone, as evidenced by their similar appearances and in-game description. Green Hill Zone itself reappears in "Sonic Blast", SA2, "Sonic Battle", and "Sonic Chronicles".

* The location for "Sonic Triple Trouble" is a bit vague, but it's hinted to be South Island due to the emeralds splitting across "the island". Some have argued that it could also be Angel Island since Knuckles is included in the game, but it's most likely the former since Sonic is shown to be living there.

* Station Square, Mystic Ruins, and Central City are all revealed in “Sonic Battle” and “Sonic Chronicles” to take place on the eastern side of South Island, thus placing the events of SA1, SA2, “Sonic Battle” and “Shadow the Hedgehog” on the island. Likewise, Emerald Town is Sonic's hometown and it takes place near Green Hill Zone.

* Leaf Storm Zone is located near Tails' workshop in “Sonic Rush”, so it could take place in the jungles surrounding the Mystic Ruins.

Factors
* Metropolis Zone is shown to be located on South Island in “Sonic Chronicles”, when it's actually located on Westside Island. Whether or not it's the same Metropolis Zone is anyone's guess.

Evidence
* Westside Island is the homeland of Miles “Tails” Prowler and the location for the events of “Sonic 2”. * “Sonic Drift” shares many zones from “Sonic 2” as well as several new zones, hinting it all takes place on Westside Island.

* “Tails' Sky Patrol” takes place either before or after “Sonic 2”, but the zones featured show many similarities to the zones seen in “Sonic 2”. This could very well take place on Westside Island.

* The location for “Sonic Heroes” is never revealed, but it's most likely Westside Island due to Rail Canyon sharing the same name as Rail Canyon from “Tails' Sky Patrol”. Likewise, Grand Metropolis shares its name with Metropolis Zone and sports many similarities to Chemical Plant Zone. Same goes for Casino Park and Casino Night Zone.

* Angel Island is a ancient floating island in the sky and the homeland of Knuckles the Echidna and the Master Emerald. It's the main setting of “Sonic 3 and Knuckles”, and made brief appearances in SA1, the “Sonic Advance” series, and “Sonic Battle”.

* In Silver's future, Angel Island sank to the planet's surface and became Onyx Island; the main setting of “Sonic Rivals".

Factors
* It's unknown if Carnival Night Zone and Balloon Park Zone actually take place on Angel Island. They never show up on the island overhead view and feel out of place. Since Angel Island crash-landed off the coast of South Island in both “Sonic 3 and Knuckles” and SA1, it's possible that these zones were located somewhere near Angel Island's impact zone. This could explain the similarly-named Night Carnival Zone in “Sonic Rush”.

I have to say I appluad your ingenuity in putting all this together. I imagine the storybook games are not a factor since those happened in alternate dimensions and such. And as for Sonic 06... I also just noticed Sonic Unleashed is strangely absent. Then again, that games zones are scattered all over the world and are clearly defined in relation to where they are exactly in the world. Sonic Colors takes place above the planet, but it would be interesting to hear your hypothesis in regards to exactly where toe orbital elevator is for the park. Sonic CD shares a similar malady, being set on the Little Planet chained to Mobius/Earth. Also, there as of yet has been no mention of the homelands of many Sonic characters. Amy, The Chaotix, Ray, Nack/Fang, Big, Honey, Bean, Bark, and Mighty to name a few off of the top of my head. It's safe to assume that Knuckles Chaotix takes place entirely on Angel Island, since Eggman built his park somewhere Knuckles and his friends could easily find it. The particular zones for the game are likely widely scattered being as in order to head to them you actually need to be launched from a central hub. I'm sure there's more i've missed, but here at least is some food for thought. And here I was starting to think I had nothing to contribute...

Actually, most of those other zones are located on other islands. Most of these islands are either close or some distance away from South Island.

Theories
* Carnival Island's origons are debatable. The American/European manual describes the island as a carnival resort which Knuckles has to guard alongside Angel Island, hinting that they're either neighboring islands or part of Angel Island (another possible explaination for Carnival Night Zone and Balloon Park Zone). On the other hand, the Japanese manual describes the island as a mysterious island which rose out of the sea which Eggman took interest in and built a themepark surrounding it. Whichever one is true, both hint that it's near Angel Island.

* Due to their similar appearance and name, it's possible that Lost Labyrinth Zone is somehow connected to South Island's Labyrinth Zone. Whether they're built by the same ancient race or are connected via underwater (which could explain the flooded passageways) is anyone's guess.

* The location of Cream's home is hinted to be near the Leaf Forest Zone as well as the similarly-named Leaf Storm Zone according to the "Sonic Rush" map. If that's the case, this should place the entire "Sonic Advance" series on South Island.

* Since Sand Ocean, Magic Carpet, and Regal Ruin all feature Egyptian-style Echidna architecture, its possible that they were once part of Angel Island's Sandopolis Zone before the island became sky-bound.

* It's possible that Toy Kingdom and Music Plant exist on the same island (possibly Carnival Island) since they're both close to Angel Island on their respective maps.

I started it quite a while ago. I was heavily inspired by Kailaku's map of Knothole Village, which was done by analyzing and mapping each and every episode's location. I wanted to do one of South Island since I find the Sonic universe so interesting to explore.

Unfortunately, the locations didn't quite mash well since neither Sega or Sonic Team paid much attention to such detail (kinda like how they ignored Eggman blowing up half the moon). That's when I resorted to theories. For example, Westside Island's Emerald Hill overlooks the Emerald Ocean, but what about South Island's Emerald Coast and Emerald Town? Maybe the Emerald Ocean lies between Emerald Hill and Emerald Coast, which suggests that Westside Island is a close neighbor to South Island.

I haven't drawn the map yet, but I am getting around to it.

Impressive list dude. The only one from the early games that I noticed is absent is Final Zone from Sonic 1. However, you could probably just count it as part of Scrap Brain Zone. Will you post the map when it's finished?

Thanks! It took me a while to make the connections (if they do comply, since this is just a theory).

Yeah, there were several zones and games which I ignored for simple reasons. Final Zone is, as you already guessed, part of the Scrap Brain Zone, so I didn't think it was important to mark as its own zone. Space-related zones like the Death Egg Zone and the locations aboard the ARK also don't count since they're not part of the planet's surface. The locations in the storybook series and "Sonic Rush Adventure" also don't count since they exist in alternate universes.

I haven't even started yet. The main problem is I have no idea where the zones are located.

The map of South Island seen in the Game Gear version of "Sonic 1" gives the locations to Green Hill Zone, Bridge Zone, Jungle Zone, Labyrinth Zone, and Scrap Brain Zone; but the rest of the zones aren't shown. The maps in SA2, "Sonic Advance", and "Sonic Rush" don't help much either.

I suspect that all locations similar to Green Hill Zone and such are somewhere near its location, but that too can be tricky.

That sounds similar to the early Archie comics, where they depicted zones as bizzare pocket dimensions that randomly appear. I think this was due to the similarly named "special zone", which was the only confirmed pocket dimension in the games at that time. They must've confused the two.
