Never was wild about any of the 3D Sonic games. Sonic Unleashed? Got bored with the werehogs stages & never finished it. Sonic Adventure 2? Never finished that either.

Classic, all the way! Even though I enjoyed the Sonic Advance games, they still don't come close to Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles

I think that I would have to go with classic era. Even though Unleashed is one of my fav games, and Generations and SA2(DC) were awesome to play through. I just never had any issues with the classics. They worked, music was awesome, levels were as fast or as slow as you wanted them to be. And it was a joyable experience overall.
* Extra points for the DC integrating tomogachi with SA series and our memory cards ^^.

Sonic had alot too
He did but Knuckles had the most out of all the characters. He was literally the tank of the group.

I might sound like an old stuck-in-the-mud, but without hesitation I have to say Classic Era. I know I'm looking at it though young eyes, but in those days Sonic was a AAA+ game; it was one of THE GAMES to buy. I remember back in the day being stopped dead in my tracks when walking by a Sonic The Hedgehog kiosk in Sears.
In days since the franchise has faded slowly back into the pack and has become a mediocre title resigned to the bargain bin about a month after release only to be picked up by someone looking for a cheap nostalgia fix. It's sad, really sad.

My experiance is the same but with the DreamCast era. I loved Sonic Adventure when I was young, becuse it was like nothing I'd ever played. My heart belonged to the Zelda series for it's adventuring vastness, but the blue blurs cocky attitude and gambit of characters quickly pushed my favorite peter-pan-cosplaying mute aside for characters I felt more for.
Now I was one of these kids who was way too old for my age (I've been called a 12 year old with mind of a 25 year old), but Heros just seemed corney to me back then, and I was urked that the tone of SA2 hadn't truly continued on. I never bought it and I slowly faded out of the fandom by 14 (Sonic X sparked my hopes but then sealed the deal with it's 4kid's cornyness). By the time 06 rolled around I was to busy writing my own novel work and playing Elder Scrolls Oblivion to be intrested in Sonic's interspecies exploits. I didn't return to the fandom until 20, where I returned with extra vigor after Generations and watching all of Sonic Satam. I now love the classics (desipite the fact I was Nintendo kid untill 98: in fact I remember criticizing the lack of market value of a Sega Saturn and it's lack of good games at a yard sale once when I was only around eight
) and I love the Dream Cast Era.
Despite Sega, I have optimism for the future. Why? Well I enjoyed Generation's gameplay despite it's paper thin story. But more importantly because I think the productive fans are the one's that will truly define Sonic's future, not SEGA. I am a writer now and an avid athelete: Sonic and his adventures encourage both my endevours in both. As, a writer and a fan I look at the Sonic franchise not because of what it is, but what it can be. I have lost most respect for SEGA but you guys...all of us together can be the proper future of Sonic. If Sega drops the ball, I think the dedicated fans won't.
Also the awnser to improving Sonic's 3D layout is simple. Make the Zones free roaming areas where you can do multiple missions like Arkham City. Make the fighting full 360 with speedy homing attacks and dashing combos. Put track-like pieces into the mix and have him do cool things like run up and down buildings. Non-linearity would diversify your possibilites. Instead of just mere A to B gameplay you could have a true Sonic Adventure. Just make the zones vast and Sonic fast and flashy, and you got the gameplay. Now, as for the story...I support adopting elements from Satam and Archie into the canon via liquidization of the current fractured canon into a singular reboot. Who honestly wouldn't want to see Sonic race through the Mystic Runis all the way to the dank dumps of Robitropolis, smashing Swatbots encroachin him from all sides in a beat-em up style as you rushed to complete your mission objectives?

I love my God, my wife, my 5 kids, and I like my guns, my beer, my whiskey, and my pickup.
I dislike politicians, policemen, diet foods, no-smoking signs, and mowing the lawn.
I like Sonic games from the Genesis days, tolerate the Sonic Adventure series, can stomach Sonic Heroes, and can't stand the rest.
And there is only one true story of Sonic, SatAM.
