I looked at the Kickstarter page for "Not Enough Rings", and I'm not sure it's sufficiently analogous to this project. "Not Enough Rings" was clearly a parody, and as such has far more leeway legally.
Legal issues could indirectly harm the project funding as well. A Kickstarter for a Metroid fan film just went up. Reactions to it are overwhelmingly negative thus far, not because of the quality of the project, but because people believe there's no chance whatsoever that it will get off the ground as Nintendo will shut it down.

Even if the project isn't shut down, that first impression is already made. People aren't going to be interested in even trying to fund something they don't feel will succeed. The shutdown of that Final Fantasy VII fan film is still fresh in everyone's minds, reinforcing that mentality. It will only worsen if the Metroid film is shut down as well.
Unless some guarantee that Sega won't shut the project down can be obtained, which seems unlikely based off your comment that they'll likely just look the other way, most people will likely dismiss Sea3on Animated the same way, regardless of how good the demo reel and Sea3on comic are.
As such, a means of funding other than Kickstarter might be more ideal. How was the Sonic Fan Film released earlier this year funded? Was it entirely through donations?
Sorry to once again be that nagging voice of doubt. Just trying to help ensure all your bases are covered.
