Robotnik and the new Robotnik/Eggman. Are they the same?

I believe Ian and another friend of mine said that he's the same Robotnik as before (saying that basically Robotnik and the new Eggman are the same character), but didn't Robotnik die in issue 50?
Another friend told me that a completely different Robotnik got some sort of virus that changed him, so before he got that virus, was he the same Robotnik or not? Are they the same character or am I being mislead? I hope someone here can clear things up for me
Sorry if that seemed confusing!

Eggman (I'll call him like this to avoid confusion) is basically Robo-Robotnik, the one we saw in the early issues, the one who destroyed "his" Sonic in his dimension. He transferred his memory into the Eggman body, that had the ability to roboticize by a simple touch with the hand. Later, he was transformed into a full flesh and blood body (Snively too since he was voluntarily roboticized) by the Bems who deroboticized almost all people of Mobius.

Robo-Robotnik/Eggman is an alternate reality Robotnik whose incompetence nearly cost him the war against his Freedom Fighters.
It should also be noted that Robo-Robotnik's technology was vastly inferior to Robotnik Prime's as of issue 19.

Robo-Robotnik/Eggman originally had a personality much closer to the SA style Eggman, in which he was somewhat goofy and clumsy of a character. However, depending on who the writer is, he sometimes has a personality more fitting to that of the original Robotnik, in which he is sort've goofy when its appropriate, but much more menacing in general, and that is how he has been portrayed lately...
I've always wanted to see the original Robotnik return as a permanent or at least long-lasting character...but then I think about all the ways it could be done wrong..like that awful issue 107 or whichever, which I think should be blanked out of existence...

Sooo, from what people are saying here, Robotnik and this new Robotnik/Eggman/whatever are not the same character. Thanks for clearing that up.

Can it be said that they really are the same character (not counting their looks because that's not a factor for me), or are they literally different characters in terms or personality and origins?
Also, who is Robotnik Prime? o.O And where did the Eggman body come from exactly?

Robotnik Prime is the original, true Robotnik, who was seemingly vaporized out of existence in issue 50. An alternate reality version of him came to Mobius shortly after, the "Eggman" we see today.
We know little of Eggman/Robo-Robotnik's history, but it's implied he experienced similar events to Robotnik Prime. The key difference is that this Robotnik was overthrown by Sonic and friends due to his stupidity, forcing him to roboticize himself and become "Robo-Robotnik". Even in this state he's a dismal failure - an encounter with Robotnik Prime proved that Robo-Robotnik's 'superior' Shadowbots were no match for SWATbots.
When Robo-Robotnik arrives on Mobius, his original body is soon destroyed by the Freedom Fighters. He then transfers his mind into a new shell, the 'Eggman' model. From that point onward his personality gradually came to resemble the insane, childish bufoon from the games.
Long story short, yes they are completely different characters despite sharing a similar 'starting point'.

In the sonic comic there are many "Zones" or dimensions, the one that the comic focuses on is the most important (dubbed the "Prime Zone" for this reason), though in these other dimensions there are an infinite amount of variations on the same characters, so any character that comes from the dimension the comic focuses on is that character's "Prime". So while there are many sonics from across the dimensions, the one from the main dimension is "Sonic Prime" for example, and same for all the other characters including Robotnik.
Eggman is one of the Robotniks from another dimension, who originally appeared as "Robo-robotnik" because he was completely roboticized (he had appeared one or twice before much earlier but) he became the main baddie in #75 following Robotnik prime's defeat and exile in another zone/dimension in #50 (though he was brought back for a comedy issue in like #108 or something, before being sent back to the other dimension), after his (Robo-robotnik's) original body was destroyed he transferred into the Eggman body basically.
