Yeah Shadow happened but....it didn't really need to.
Well, I didn't mind them expanding on Shadow's story, but the way they did it was extremely confusing.

Exactly. After Heroes until like Unleashed it gets confusing
And that is a big reason Sonic has nose dived as a series in general,
Sega stopped making games with a really good storyline. They just became rip offs of other popular titles or retreads.

Yea. thought Colors and Generations have really brought the series back up
I thought "Unleashed" was good too. It had good gameplay, beautiful graphics, and a decent story. And for once, the amount of characters present was tolerable (my new favorite being Professor Pickle). Sure, the werehog stages got tiresome, but he was still playable (unlike '06).
I mean, not every game is perfect. Everybody praises the "Sonic Adventure" series for being the best of the 3D Sonic games, despite some of the side characters' wonky gameplay and glitched out levels; and both "Sonic 1" and "Sonic Colors" had tedious stages that required more platforming than speed sections.
Most of the recent games have been improving greatly in gameplay and design, but its the butthurt, over-obsessive fanbase that gives these games a bad reception. Personally, I think the series is suffering more from nit-picky fanboys rather than production problems.

You didn't have the Wii version did you?
Okay, I admit I have the X-Box 360 version. I've seen the Wii version, and despite its downgraded graphics, the gameplay still looks playable. Maybe a bit slippery perhaps, but what did you expect from running so fast?

As for a character I would love to see changed, Big. I like his design and the idea of him using a fishing pole as a weapon, but they treated him like absolute crap from the get go in the games. Lousy voice, lousy story, lousy gameplay, lousy personality.

You know, regarding 06... it could have worked storywise if they put some effort into it.... now I kind of want to see if I can rewrite it, make it.... decent.

It could of. maybe replace Elise with Sally. and as for Big we basically all agreed that he should be killed

Actually, I'm probably one of the few people here that supports Big. Sure, he has problems as a character, but I still like the overall idea behind him. It's not often you see a Sonic character that's mellow in nature and prefers a more simplistic and pacifistic lifestyle.
Personally, it's hard for me to fully hate a character. Characters that most people generally criticize as being useless (like Cream, Big, Silver, Mammoth Mogul ect.) are usually characters that I feel are not properly portrayed, and the more annoying characters (like Scratch, Dulcy, Dingo, and Charmy) have their moments of charm and plenty of hidden potential. They just need to find better roles to play.
In truth, the only characters I can't stand are the bland, boring ones. Nearly every character in the Sonic series has a colorful appearance and a distinctive personality; so the uninteresting ones tend to stick out like needles in a mattress. Notable examples include: most of the Echindas in Penders' stories, the Ancient Walkers, Warlord Kodos, and Nate Morgan. None of them stand out in any way and are completely uninteresting as characters.

And personally the only echidna I like from Penders's stories was Remmington and that was cuz he had the hat...
I also didnt' like the Kodos or the Ancient Walkers either.
Nate I'm neutral on. He had an interesting backstory but the coolest thing he did was his speech before he died.

As a character, I think that Big would be better off as somewhat of a sage-like character. In all honesty, I'd be totally cool with him, then.
...Well, decent gameplay would be another important factor.

Not to mention creating the ring-powered laser cutter attached to his glasses.
