Never really liked Sonic Selects. With all the back issue stuff and reprints there already are, why get one that's probably only gonna have one of the stories I want?
Because they don't just cater to your needs?
In all seriousness though, the sheer amount of books containing reprinted Sonic stuff is getting out of hand. they've got the
Sonic Archives, Sonic Selects and the
Knuckles Archives series of reprints and then there's the
Sonic Universe graphic novels, the
Sonic Legacy books which reprint the stuff in black and white, along with the
Best of Sonic TPBs and we've also got the graphic novels that are reprinting sagas,
Genesis was first and now there's another on the way.
What's good about the two
Archives and the
Selects runs of reprints is Archive is reprinting a lot of the eariler material which is sought after be collectors and new comers to the book. Its a great way for someone to put down a bit of cash and get themselves 4 or 6 issues worth of comics without resorting to secondary collectors market prices. Afterall, little Billy isn't going to be able to afford the $50+ that a copy of the first issue tends to trade for. Small in size, affordable and pretty much all that is needed.
Now as for
Legacy, I see no real point. The Archive stuff is still out there to buy, and in all honesty, reprinting the material in black and white to appeal to older fans seeme pointless to me. It's cool that each
Legacy book contains like 16 issues, but I still think this one is pointless. Maybe because this is a comic book that's always been in colour. I feel the same one about comics that were originally printed in black and white and later on get reprinted in color, I'd rather read the book how it was originally printed.
And as for the
Universe, The Best of and the
Saga trades, another pointless one,
Genesis especially! These seem to be reprints of a lot of the most recent material, material that's pretty much easy to obtain if you know where to look. You don't even need to look hard to find them! I was able to grab issues 178-225 in one store last year, and that material which was 4 to 5 years old at the time, not only that but this same store had issues of Sonic dating back as far as 1995. TPB books are a good way to collect story arcs together in one nice book for easy reading, and I'm all for that, but they'll eventually get to these issues in the
Archives and no doubt when the time comes Archie will do a
Universe Archives series when they get nearer to the time.
And you know what? I'll go as far to include the recent
Super Specials series here too! Another book Archie puts out which pretty much focuses on reprinting old material. I know Flynn is writing for like 4 different comic titles for Archie, but is there a need for this one? Archie's putting out enough reprint material of the Sonic series as it is, this one is just the piss taker! Yeah it does contain some new material, but the old material clearly out weighs the new.
And just for kicks, I'm gonna add this years
Free Comic Book Day issue. "Hey guys, let's reprint issue #230 as this year's FCBD special! Oh wait? What's that? We only printed the actual issue less then 6 months ago? Hmmm... No problem! We'll make it a "Special Edition" version! And by "Special Edition" I mean we'll just throw in a couple of extra pages containing fanfic of what some of the characters were up to while the main events of the issue were taking place! What's that? ... No, one of them can't be about Rotor sitting on the thunderbucket after eating an entire bucket of KFC all to himself... Wait, on second thoughts..."
Bottom line? Archie
really needs to calm down with all this reprint crap.
