To quote the description on the video:
"This was included in storyboard form on the DVD set. Here is proof that it WAS in fact animated."
It was pretty obvious it was animated before this video was discovered. Animation cels have been kicking around for years, especially cels of Sonic at the very end of the video where he is pointing a finger. I own a couple of the cels from this video, as far back as 2005, however the ones I own are from a sequence not featured in the video, but it's obvious they are from this unused opening/promo/whatever it is as Sonic is the same color of blue on my cels as he is in this video. I was saying it back when the DVD was first released that it was clear it was animated. Afterall, why go through all the trouble of storyboarding, pencil layouts, painting backgrounds and painting cels if you're not actually going to film them?
But the main questions to this are:
.Where is the full length version to this?
And more importantly:
.Does it still exist?
Knowing DiC's track record of archiving material like this, I really doubt it. Any unused material would eventually be junked by DiC to save up room. Now that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, perhaps someone who worked on the show might have a VHS copy.
Take The Real Ghostbusters for instance. DiC produced that show and when they are in the early stages on making that series, they produced a short 4 minute promo to showcase how the show would look. What was interesting about that promo (much like the few brief moments in the video above) was it was still a work in progress and certain things were not finalised, for example:
. The Ghostbusters all wore the same color jumpsuit (in the series they were each given their own unique color)
. The Protonpacks, Ghost-Traps and PKE Meters were all of a different design.
. Slimer was much like the character he was in the first movie (so not the kid appeal character he ended up as)
. Peter Venkman's design was more close to looking like Bill Murray.
Bottom line was, since this promo was never intended to air fully and only a few brief clips of it were shown on TV, (anything else from the promo that was used in the opening sequence were reshot/reanimated) DiC destroyed the master copy of the promo. Lucky enough, when TIme Life were putting the series together on DVD a few years back and were looking for extras for the special features, one of the key staff members on the production of the show had kept a copy of the promo on VHS after all these years and it was included in the Complete Series DVD set.
So there could be a chance that this unused SatAM opening/promo/whatever it is could still exist. The only problem with finding out would be if it does, who still has it? Again, I doubt DiC has it because if they did, no doubt Shout!Factory would of included it in the Complete Series DVD set.
'Star Wars' is my story, just like my house is my house. So if I wanna paint my house green, even if everyone else thinks it should be red, guess what? I'm gonna paint it Jar Jar! - George Lucas
"The Devil Inside is the new scam from director William Something Something. The movie stars actors and was edited on a computer. Somewhere. This movie is the latest film in a series of very low budget films designed to look like real movies! And be released in theaters to make a quick buck via a horribly off kilter budget to profit ratio that the general public seem to be stupidly unaware of! These films use to be called 'direct to video' but now they are called 'first run features'. These films then vanish from the theaters, like a rapist leaving the scene of a crime." - Mike Stoklasa of RedLetterMedia
