Any Video Game based movie would have a lot of fans to back it up...however movies based on games have a reputation for being terrible (Probably due to Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter).
A lot of Game companies do not like the idea of a movie company butchering their games. Also SEGA of Japan tries very hard not to let Archie Sonic spread into other genres.

Actually Super Mario Bros had a fairly good script out before it was replaced with the Movie we have today. Somewhere along the line...somebody thought a Science Fiction Mario was better then Fantasy Mario.
Also if I was doing a Halo Movie or a Metal Gear Solid movie I would probably go with live action then animation as the games try to look as real as possible. Sonic movie should be animated, Mario should be animated, Metal Gear probably should be live.

Really? Do you happen to know if there's a link to where you can read the original script?
I'm curious to see what it would have been about before the stupid dinosaurs evolution crap.
Original “Fantasy” Script
Writers: Jim Jennewein & Tom S. Parker
Revision Date: July 17th, 1991
Pages: 114
Overview:
Envisioned by writers Tom S. Parker and Jim Jennewein (The Flintstones, Richie Rich) as a comedic take on fairy tale themes in the same vein as The Princess Bride (and eventually the “Shrek” series), this gem of a screenplay gives us a glimpse of what the film would have been like if it were a more direct, cartoonish adaptation of the games.
The story follows brothers Mario and Luigi as they attempt to rescue Princess Hildy (that name makes you appreciate Daisy that much more, huh?) from the evil King Koopa in a wacky world reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. This screenplay laid the groundwork for how the characters were used by later writers: Mario is the reluctant hero, while Luigi is the dreamer who gets the girl. Both must overcome deep-stemmed differences to become “brothers” for the first time.
This script and its writing team were let go following the departure of director Greg Beeman. Without another director willing to take over the project as it was, the producers were forced to go with the wildly different concept pitched by husband-and-wife directing team Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel of Max Headroom fame.

The main cast of characters consist of Sonic, Sally, Tails, Bunnie, Uncle Chuck, Jules, Bernie, King & Queen Acorn, Knuckles, Julie-Su, Espio, Mighty, Vector, Locke, Lara-Le, Wynmacher, Snively, Crabmeat, E-102 and Dr. Robotnik. As only the main plotline has been worked out, it remains to be seen what other characters will have speaking roles. At present, I envision a number of characters seen in various incarnations of the games, comic book and animated series will be utilized as "extras" throughout.
I can at least quell some fears that even if they don't have major parts, characters like Amy Rose, Rotor and Antoine will be seen in the film as the story requires a number of characters at least being seen as the Swatbots round up the citizenry for roboticization. (Andno, none of the three mentioned undergo the process. I don't need unnecessary rumors flying wild on the internet, thank you.)

But there has been some good Video Game movies like Resident Evil and Mortal Combat.
