Alright, here's the full review for Twilight's Kingdom:

Above all else, I feel that the main reason this finale didn't work for me is that it failed to leave me emotionally invested in the narrative. Flawed though they were, The Return of Harmony, A Canterlot Wedding, and, to a lesser extent, The Crystal Empire had key moments that managed to move me. Magical Mystery Cure was absolutely masterful in the way it used emotion to drive its narrative, in this regard eclipsing not just everything else in the show, but most media in general. With Twilight's Kingdom, there was nothing that left me caring about the conflict beyond my already established attachment to the characters and setting, leaving the story bereft of the gravity and dramatic tension it needed to work as intended. Princess Twilight Sparkle suffered from this as well, but that two-parter suffered from very few flaws otherwise, leaving it a solid episode if not an ideal milestone. Twilight's Kingdom, however, has plenty of other issues.

Tirek was a lousy villain through and through, with a poor design and no presence whatsoever outside of his first scene. Friendship is Magic become popular in part because it was generally successful in subverting clichés, yet Tirek was as generic as antagonists come, with no motivation beyond “Bwahaha! I’m evil! I’ll show those stupid ponies!” All of the other major villains had at least something going for them.

Luna was motivated by envy and insecurity, with a tragic fall and eventual redemption; though this arc wasn’t handled terribly well in the actual show (to be fair, I believe I read somewhere that Lauren Faust had wanted to spread it across a full season, but was forced to truncate it by Hasbro), it oozed with dramatic potential that fans have since capitalized on with works like the fantastic Moonrise and Lullaby for a Princess.

Discord did not consider himself evil and simply acted according to his nature; though he considered his imprisonment unjust, he actually did not opt for revenge against Celestia, instead attempting to paint himself as her moral superior. Beyond that, he was, and still is, of course incredibly entertaining.

Queen Chrysalis, despite being presented as the first wholly evil antagonist in the show, was still ultimately motivated by the desire to perform her duty and provide for her people, which remains far more interesting than conquering for its own sake. Moreover, the buildup to her reveal, particularly in role in This Day Aria, combined with a strong visual design, created enough dramatic weight to give her a very effective stage presence.

Despite being the previously weakest major antagonist in the show proper, King Sombra’s presentation as a Sauron-like force of pure malevolence was handled fairly well; though it left him without interesting characterization, he still provided the tension and atmosphere necessary for the story to work.

Even Sunset Shimmer, as horribly trite and clichéd as she was, at least had the fallen apprentice and foil to Twilight angles to work with.

With Tirek, there’s absolutely nothing about him as a character that I find interesting. Powers and potential G1 nostalgia do not a good antagonist make.

 

Speaking of Discord, his presentation here was a mixed bag. The initial scene with him was hilarious and likely the strongest part of the finale. Beyond that, I did enjoy the way in which the plot strengthened his friendship with the Mane 6, to the point that it now feels wholehearted rather than reluctant outside of his bond with Fluttershy. It’s a nice continuation of his arc, though hopefully it won’t completely curb his antics in future seasons. His betrayal, however, was a mess. It felt very forced, especially with Tirek’s tired “Join Me!” speech that countless villains used since Darth Vader popularized the concept in The Empire Strikes Back. Discord thrives on the unexpected, and having him mock the cliché nature of Tirek’s offer would have been far more in character. When that failed, I kept hoping that he was going along just so he could betray Tirek at the opportune time and help save the day…yet it never happened. Instead, he indicated that his friendship with Fluttershy and the others meant nothing to him, only to be completely forgiven without punishment by the end of the episode.

Discord’s motive for this betrayal is said to be the opportunity to achieve his former position of power, but this makes no sense whatsoever. It was explicitly established that the only weapons Celestia and the others possessed that could stop Discord were the Elements of Harmony, which have been neutralized all season. Only his newfound sense of friendship kept him from running amok. Discord could have conquered Equestria again at any point all season. He didn’t need Tirek at all. He knew this, but chose not to, yet his actions in the finale fly in the face of this established fact. About the only positive thing I can say about the betrayal is that I liked how the Mane 6 had still rubbed off on Discord, to the point that he still possessed some remnants of trust and idealism.

Princess Celestia wasn’t done justice in this episode. Not even close. Following the premiere, which she spent most of as an offscreen damsel in distress, Celestia wasn’t given so much as a cameo all season until last week, where she still didn’t have any dialogue. Rather than trying to make up for it, the finale lumped her together with Luna and Cadance, to the point that they were essentially one character named “The Other Princesses”, without any individual characterization to call their own. On top of that, the nerfing of ability Meghan McCarthy has been bludgeoning Celestia with since A Canterlot Wedding continued unabated. In the first season she was this fascinating, majestic figure that could very easily be interpreted in quite a few interesting ways, not the least of which being an allegory for God. Now she barely appears at all, and when she does she’s presented as useless. Magical Mystery Cure brought back that sense of awe and mystique while expanding upon it, to the point that Celestia’s Ballad became not just the high point of her character, but easily one of the best moments in the entire series. Sadly, it seems that level of respect is destined to be the exception rather than the rule, at least as long as McCarthy is writing the bulk of the milestone episodes.

The episode implies that Cadance as at least several centuries old, begging the question of what she was doing all those years prior to the reemergence of the Crystal Empire. It also indicates that “artificial” Alicorns still live longer than normal ponies. Given that McCarthy has stated that Twilight will not outlive her friends, this makes it likely that the rest of the Mane 6 will be given unusually long life spans, if not outright immortality, at some point. Then again, it’s quite possible that the show will never address this by its conclusion, leaving the matter to be settled by either developer comments or personal headcanons.

 

The hivemind characterization that “The Other Princesses” suffered from sadly also applies to Spike and the Mane 5, just as it did in A Canterlot Wedding and Princess Twilight Sparkle. If anything, it’s even worse than those cases. Other than Fluttershy, whose friendship with Discord was at least brought up, none of them were allowed to show their individual personalities at all, save perhaps the throwaway dialogue about boasting in the first few seconds. Were it not for their keys, they could very easily have been written out of the episode with no repercussions, which is a major issue for a series that thrives on its ensemble cast. It also didn’t help that they were so easily captured by Tirek, making it seem like they were just getting in the way and forcing Twilight to hold back from defeating him through her own power (despite Tirek’s claims of an impasse, Twilight wasn’t so much as winded). At least in A Canterlot Wedding they fought alongside Twilight with equal ability, while in Princess Twilight Sparkle they saved her life. Here, they’re just treated like useless tagalongs until it’s time to open the Deus Ex Machina box.

Said reveal was incredibly underwhelming and an unsatisfactory payoff to the primary plotline of the season. Twilight was given a lengthy battle sequence against Tirek (one that admittedly was very well animated), but once the other characters are powered up the villain is defeated instantaneously. We never get to see the Mane 6 use their newfound power as individuals; as such, what was likely intended as a means of letting all of the characters shine completely fell flat and did nothing to change the impression that the finale was all about only Twilight. The “Rainbow Power” (a cringeworthy term that thankfully was never actually said) designs were awful and an obvious move to sell toys. On top of that, the entire arc feels pointless, as the characters give up the Elements of Harmony in exchange for a replacement that feels exactly the same. The box then turning into a castle felt very contrived.

At least the rest of the Mane 6, along with Spike, were actually given a reward for once, though I’m skeptical as to whether their new positions will play a meaningful role going forward.

Even the songs were lackluster. Though not bad, they are among Ingram’s weaker efforts. I was certain that the finale would deliver musically, given that the end of each previous season offered at least one excellent song, with Magical Mystery Cure going above and beyond to deliver no less than five incredible pieces, along with two decent ones. The first song was decent once it got going and Celestia, Luna, and Cadance started singing, but the first half with Twilight was actually somewhat boring. The second song was bland from start to finish. Neither was integrated in such a way as to emotionally augment the narrative. Comparatively, “At the Gala” helps illustrate the characters’ expectations of the Grand Galloping Gala as this amazing spectacle, making the subsequent dashing of their hopes all the more effective. “This Day Aria” helps the audience care about the real Cadance while showcasing the vile nature of Chrysalis. The songs in Magical Mystery Cure form the heart and soul of the narrative. With Twilight’s Kingdom, the songs just feel tacked on.

I was mildly entertained while watching the episode, but even then I was noticing flaws. Upon further examination the entire finale feels like a mess, to the point that it’s my least favorite milestone so far. The series deserves better. Going forward, I’d like to see other writers given a chance at the two-parters. Meghan McCarthy’s written some strong small-scale character-driven episodes, but these massive “epic” stories don’t’ play to her strengths.

In the deep, dark corridors of Filefront, someone made a VS MLP mod for Soulstorm. It adds the Equestrians as a playable race and adds a few maps based on the show, a little wartorn for convenience.

 

I'm currently launching a Crusade on them through their maps, and their units like to field Magic Barrier Spellweavers, causing my units to sit there and blast the barriers to no effect while a few Pegasii flank and blast away my vehicular defense.

I've been on a single map, titled "Outer Ponyville" for hours, while my allied offenses are getting monkeystomped by a bunch of sorcerous technicolor horses. I've lost my Force Commander in single combat with that Celestia witch, and have to rely on my Chaplain to get shit done. Artillery is proving nice, right until the occasional Rainboom happens, decimating my forward offense and shaking my frontline strategic points. That doesn't even cover my RELIC, defended by a pair of SUPER HEAVY LAND RAIDER CRUSADERS, which can SOLO ARMIES, gedtting trounced by an "Alicorn Defender" and her "Dragon-Guard". I DID successfully blast away their Pegasus Leader Unit before another Rainboom caused my offense to outright flop. I'm currently trying to move troops towards the Spellweavers in an attempt to put sustained fire on them to cause them to drop, so I can get a clear shot at their HQ.

I've reached the main map. Apparently the modder made it into a stronghold, complete with intro and conversation. The defenses are....pretty extensive, considering I start out a little ways away from the town area. If I beat this, I go directly to the next stronghold and fight the big boss.

 

Apparently Twilight is the Leader, since she gives the opening speech and does the bickering with the Malleus Inquisitor.

What's this? An excellent fan animation that easily surpasses the fight scene of the finale in choreography and dramatic weight, with better characterization of the Royal Sisters than McCarthy has ever supplied? Why yes, yes it is.

 

 

Unofficial or not, this offers a high note to end the season on.

The more I think about it, the more Twilight's Kingdom drives me crazy with how badly written virtually every aspect of it is. Particularly irritating is that McCarthy presents Twilight, her favorite character, as exempt from the standards of Key Episodes. Everyone else had to struggle with and overcome a character flaw in order to receive her key, but Twilight is portrayed as flawless throughout the whole finale. I think McCarthy was trying to have Twilight's grudge against Discord be the flaw she overcame, but if that's the case the concept was botched so utterly that it's rather stunning. Unfortunately, the overwhelmingly positive reception the episode received means that similar drivel will likely be in future milestones.

 

Thankfully, the opposite is true of Rarity Takes Manehattan. It's an episode that is increasingly revealed to be brilliant the more one analyzes it.

Alright, I got around to watching Rainbow Rocks. It was the trimmed down version from what I can tell, but I'm going to assume that the cut content is not so significant that its inclusion would have significantly altered my perception of the film.

Overall, it was better than its predecessor and managed to be somewhat entertaining, but I still didn't care for it.

 

What brought the film down more than anything else was characterization. The Humane 5 felt like one-dimensional cardboard cutouts of their show counterparts in the first film, and here they were no better. AJ and Flutters felt like they were just there for the sake of inclusion, while Pinkie's humor sadly missed the mark more often than not. By far the biggest offenders, however, were Rarity and Rainbow, who felt like parodies of their selves from the first half of Season 1 (that is, before Suited for Success and Sonic Rainboom). Perhaps I'm just being particularly critical of the two here because their pony counterparts are my favorites out of the Mane 6 proper, but that's just it: they're my favorites because I see them as the most complex and nuanced members of the cast; absolutely none of that depth was on display here.

 

It's especially irritating in Rarity's case. While I can't think of any instances of Dash receiving standout characterization from McCarthy, said writer was responsible for Green Isn't Your Color and Sweet and Elite and co-wrote Inspiration Manifestation. Rarity's depiction was fantastic in those episodes, and it's obvious that McCarthy is capable of doing her justice when she actually tries. Instead we were subjected to a shell driven not by artistic passion and a desire to spread culture and beauty, but a superficial obsession with fashion and selfishness.

 

Yes, some of this flanderization can be attributed to the Dazzlings' influence, but only to a small extent. The Humane 5 were only affected for a small part of the film, yet they remained flat and one-note from start to finish.

 

Moving on to other characters, Spike was surprisingly underwhelming. He was the sole character in the first film whom I feel was written well, yet here he was tacked on, serving no purpose other than putting extra pressure on Twilight and providing a cheap get out of jail free card at the end. Celestia and Luna were completely worthless tools that existed only to be pawns of the villains...which, sadly, is about par for the course from McCarthy these days. As with Rarity, Dash, and the rest of the Mane 5, the only reason I don't take greater issue with this is that their pony counterparts weren't affected, leaving the characterization poor but ultimately harmless in the long run.

 

The villains were alright, if rather cliche. My main issue with their characterization is that it didn't reflect their supposed backstory. I was never sold on the idea that they had been in exile for centuries; it felt more like they'd been on Earth (or whatever the setting is supposed to be) for a year or two at most. Their dynamic is a rather tired one (notably, as ANY mentioned in his review, Avatar The Last Airbender features a trio of villainesses with similar personalities who manage to be far, far more engaging), but at least their leader came across as intelligent and competent. Everything about her was leagues better than Sunset Shimmer in the first film, and I was able to actually buy into her plan. Taking over the world isn't exactly the most original goal out there, but at least she was just feeding off of a throng of mind-controlled teenagers rather than trying to turn them into an army.

 

Unfortunately, their fate at the end of the film was very confusing. If they're supposed to be Sirens, why were they physically unharmed when the Sirens were destroyed? Why were their abilities tied to those gems? Were they "normal teenage girls" who were possessed by Sirens? If so, why weren't their personalities altered when the Sirens were destroyed? I actually liked the film's climax and feel it was a sizable improvement over the headache-inducing abandonment of all logic that was the finale of the first film, but it still has serious issues.

 

This applies to the film as a whole regarding plot holes. It's an improvement over its predecessor, but there's still much left to be desired, particularly in regard to the perception of magic within the setting. The film's world was allegedly devoid of magic until the first film, but its denizens don't seem to bat an eye at it. The student body doesn't associate the Fall Formal with "That one time a student turned into a demon, turned two other students into demons, and mind controlled everyone in sight, only to be stopped by six girls that sprouted pony ears, tail-like hair extensions, and, in some cases, wings before firing a giant rainbow laser that defeated the demons and left a giant crater in the ground." They just view it as a case of Sunset being a jerk. Human Twilight seems to be the only person in the world actually disturbed by a series of events that should have radically altered humanity's perception of reality.

 

Going back to characters, Twilight was portrayed as surprisingly fallible...in the human world. She still wasn't given any meaningful character flaws, but it was at least nice to see McCarthy acknowledge that she doesn't have all the answers and give someone else a chance to be the heroine for once. Unfortunately, this is essentially completely undone by Twilight's introduction. As Art has already brought up, her ability to modify the portal on the spot was simply ludicrous and far, far beyond the bounds of intellect she was previously limited to (outside of gags like the invention in Feeling Pinkie Keen). I understand that some degree of contrivance was needed to get Twilight back in the human world, but McCarthy handled it in one of the worst possible ways, especially given her decision to rub it in by having Twilight explain it in great detail to her poor, clueless friends. The explanation for excluding the Mane 5 was also quite thin, especially given the aforementioned obliviousness of the Canterlot High student body.

 

It felt as if McCarthy spent most of Twilight's screentime trying to emphasize that she wasn't a Mary Sue, only to give her one of the biggest Mary Sue moments in all of FiM in her first scene. I try not to use the term lightly, but that's what I saw.

 

Then there's Brad or Flash or whatever the heck his name is. I still don't care about him in the slightest. He remains a worthless, pointless walking cliche that needs to either receive a great deal of complexity and originality or hit the road and never return.

 

That leaves Sunset Shimmer, without a doubt the most well received character in the film. She's certainly vastly improved from her initial portrayal, but she was so horrendously written in the first film that such a feat amounts to little. I liked her here, but not to the extent that most seem to. Part of the problem is that her character is ultimately built on a poor foundation: her arc revolves around her pursuit of redemption and acceptance, but said redemption began with an abrupt and very, very poorly written turnaround at the end of the first film. It's not fair to blame Rainbow Rocks for the failings of its predecessor, but the problem still stands. Beyond that, it feels like there was a great deal of squandered potential regarding her status as the only "pony" in the group besides Twilight. It gives the two a great deal of common ground, particularly since both were gifted mages and students of Celestia, and I would have liked to have seen that further explored.

 

Still, Sunset was overall the best written character of the film, and I actually wouldn't mind seeing more of her. McCarthy managed to turn one of the worst characters G4 has produced thus far into someone rather likable, and for that she deserves some credit...though she was responsible for said initial poor characterization.

 

The plot of the film was cliche but serviceable, with the supernatural element incorporated well enough for it to remain entertaining, if not particularly stimulating. I'm getting a little tired of the core theme of friendship being handled in such a ham-fisted, over-the-top manner. I don't find speeches that espouse repetitive, simplistic platitudes or giant rainbow lasers all that relatable or moving, frankly. FiM has on multiple occasions portrayed friendship in a breathtakingly beautiful light, but it's almost always in small, subtle ways, whether it be Rarity placing her cherished reputation on the line by standing up for Fluttershy's modeling performance despite her jealousy, Ponyville uniting to help Rainbow Dash overcome her struggle with learning, or the Mane 6 overcoming the effects of Starswirl's spell by simply being themselves and aiding one another.

 

Beyond the obvious and over-emphasized point that FRIENDSHIP IS GOOD and the struggles of Twilight and Sunset with perfectionism and acceptance, respectively, there really wasn't anything in the way of subtext or thematic weight within the film. This isn't surprising but remains rather disappointing, especially since Season 4 had at least two episodes (Rarity Takes Manehattan and Testing, Testing, 123) that subtlety commented on the relationship between human society and the ideals that FiM showcases through pony culture. The Equestria Girls spinoffs feature a literal convergence of the two societies, but after two films nothing has been done with it thematically.

 

Rainbow Rocks featured a greater number of locations than the first film, along with a handful of clothing changes. Even something as simple as the sleepover at Pinkie's, with the cast wearing pajamas, goes a long way to make the setting feel more alive and believable, rather than some dull pocket dimension that revolves around a high school. It's certainly no Equestria, but it's something. Unfortunately, the designs for most of the random students are still rather poor, leaving shots focusing on crowds unpleasant to watch.

 

The humor of the film was a mixed bag, but there were several moments where I laughed. Maud's cameo was the comedic highlight of the film, which was surprising given my tepid reaction to her character and episode in Season 4.

 

One element of the film's writing that stood out was that McCarthy relied on repetition far, far too much. The bit where a character accidentally insults Sunset and apologies was driven into the ground, while there were a few jokes, such as the ones about lunch and Trixie vanishing, that would have been funnier if left concluded at the first punchline. The fanservice in general remained a strong point, as it was with the first film. I'm rather shocked that they were able to slip the Lyra and Bon Bon cheek rub in, though I suppose most people wouldn't see it as something suggestive unless they were aware of the characters and their fanon relationship.

 

Last but not least is the music. While by no means Daniel Ingram's best work, the soundtrack was very enjoyable and easily better than that of the first film, which consisted of tracks that were entirely unmemorable save for a great song that was ruined by painfully stupid narrative context. None of the songs in Rainbow Rocks were held back by such awkwardness; to the contrary, the narrative actually augmented the Dazzlings' songs, with Welcome to the Show standing out as not just the best song in either Equestria Girls film, but a great song period. By FiM standards it's above average at best, but that's simply a testament to the sheer quality of Ingram's work over the course of the series.

-Characterization was poor for the Humane 5, Spike, Celestia, and Luna, mixed for Twilight and the two side villains, and decent for Sunset and the lead villain.

-Alright plot with far less issues than that of the first film. Compelling climax with a confusing resolution.

-Repetitive writing.

-Humor was mixed but overall decent.

-Lack of meaningful subtext and emotional moments.

-Strong soundtrack.

 

Overall Film Rating: Mediocre

 

Mixed thoughts on the recent announcement of an actual FiM movie. I'm mainly worried about whether the spirit and characterization of the series will be captured, given that the writer is a newcomer. At least they don't seem to be rushing it.

I did seen the movie on natural television. And I thought... it was alright. But I give a good 7 rating.

 

As for the upcoming movie... I don't know if it will work out as a movie. As long if they make it right and doesn't add any humans.
