Evangelion 2.0: You Can (not) Advance

For those of you who are a fan of the English dub, FUNimation managed to bring back Spike Spencer as the voice of Shinji Ikari and Allison Shipp-Keith as Misato Katsuragi. The sequel also reintroduces into the series the character Asuka Langely... Shikinami (that's different), as well as a series of entirely new characters piloting entirely new Evangelion Units battling entirely new Angels. No word yet as to who else is casted for the English voices for these guys. (Even Asuka's English voice hasn't been announced yet.)
For fans of the Japanese cast, it's the same as the 1995 cast for the TV series. No worries there.
So, yeah. Major changes on the horizon for fans of the old Evangelion TV series.

But most of those I know who saw it also liked it. There was only one person I know who hated this movie, and it was because it didn't feel like as much like an animated Stanley Kubrick film like the original series did near it's end. I'm still very excited, though! I have been since seeing the original Japanese trailer a while back.

Very excited to see this. It's been a very long time coming. The first one was quite good, it felt much tighter in the story telling department compared to the original series (not that there was anything wrong with the original), and it did throw me rather unexpectedly with the early reveal of Kaworu at the end of it. So, I have me some high hopes that 2.0 continues to surprise me with some new takes on this brilliant little series.
I have my fingers crossed for Tiffany Grant coming back for Asuka.

The show ended when they did the last original movie. I don't need any more or care to ever see any more.

The first of the new films pretty much is faithful to the original anime frame for frame but the second begins to diverge. I won't say it's better or worse (it's very very good), but it does do things different.

I don't see why she can't voice Asuka. Tiffany has worked at FUNimation for quite some time now, and it would be kind of silly for the company to overlook her for someone else.
Yeah, that was one of the things that kind of annoyed me about the movie as well. It was good, but good by default of the TV series. There were slight changes made to the story later on in the film, and they seem to promise bigger changes in the second film (and it does change dramatically in the second film), but they were still only very slight changes and didn't effect the viewing experience that much.
The best way to watch the first movie is just as if you wanted to rewatch the series. The following films should compensate you for sitting through stuff you've already seen. And all of this would have been a little more obvious if FUNimation kept the original Japanese title to the first movie Evangelion, New Theatrical Edition: Prelude, suggesting that the film preludes all of the changes made later on in the series. But instead they renamed it Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone for some reason, and now we're all expecting something new and exciting.
The biggest change in the first movie story wise is that
There are a few cinematic changes as well, but the only difference is that you can tell Hideaki Anno directed Love & Pop in between the two Evangelion franchises. (With the camera sliding around on the ground looking up at stuff.)

Evangelion 2.0 gets one-day theatrical screening across Canada January 20, 2011. Check your local theaters for times. Not that anyone in Canada seems to care on this site, but there it is.
No word yet on exact U.S. or Australian theatrical screening dates.

Closest screen for me is all the way in Greensboro, NC. That's a 2-hour drive from where I live. A screening closer to Raleigh would be amazing, but......
It looks like it already screened in Australia, albeit at only one anime festival.
