Though the "extreme stuff" is my favorite, I still love classic metal like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead etc. because they kick ass and sound great. I don't have any special rules for what makes great metal (and music in general), the most important factor is that it sounds good, then everything else comes into play (catchiness, technical skill, meanings of lyrics etc.).
I'm iffy with prog-metal because while bands like Dream Theater, Opeth, and Pain of Salvation definitely have talent, they get boring after a while. I've had Opeth's "Blackwater Park" for two years now and I might have listened to the whole album ONCE, while I've had Nocturnus's "The Key" for about the same amount of time and I've listened to the whole album at least 50 times. If you like this stuff, that's fine, but for better alternatives, I suggest Coroner, Cynic, late Pestilence, Nocturnus, late Death, Watchtower, and Atheist for starters because while they're progressive and technical as all hell, they don't make you want to sleep.
I detest goth metal (Type O Negative, Cradle of Filth etc.), groove metal (Pantera, Machine Head, Devil Driver, Hellyeah etc.), industrial metal (Rammstein, Ministry, Marilyn Manson etc.), mathcore (Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan etc.), metalcore (Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, As I Lay Dying etc.), and deathcore (Despised Icon, Job For a Cowboy). I didn't put nu-metal on the list because while it's indeed much worse than any of those I mentioned above, it's not really metal (same thing with toughguy hardcore, it's not really metal but it sucks a lot). I hate these not to fit in with thrash and death metal elitists, but because I've listened to many from each sub-genre and none of them sound good.
If I had the talent to play guitar, I'd definitely start up a technical thrash metal band similar to Coroner because there needs to be more tech-thrash.

Also throw AC/DC into that list, even if they aren't metal.

I'm not sure if any of you guys heard, but Judas Priest release their new album in June, apparently it's a double album based on the life of Nostradamus
I'm not sure how you can make a double metal album out of that, but if anybody can, it's the Priest!

Also, I'm not sure if Rammstein actually counts as a metal band, they always sounded more industrial rock to me.

Is anybody into power metal? The only power metal band I really like is Manowar, but many times (well actually, ALL the time) their lyrics go to new heights not even Spinal Tap could dream of topping, but over then that they are a pretty good band.

Does anyone here listen to grind? I'm slowly getting into it, the grind bands that I'm listening to now are early Napalm Death, early Carcass, Terrorizer, and Repulsion. Carcass has to be my favorite of the bunch because not only were they masters of their craft, but they'd change their sound with each album while still sounding great. As far as being repulsive, Carcass's first three albums make Cannibal Corpse (sonically and lyrically) sound like Bon Jovi.

Not me! Hell, I play Guitar Hero 3 all the time, and think Through the Fire and Flames is one of the better songs in the setlist, but I certainly do not think the band itself has much actual talent.
Great songs, horrible band.

Haven't really listened to any grind over here, sadly.
