Why The Changes In Season 2?
#1

Why was Roter (is that how the spell his name?) changed completely? I know the voice actor was changed, but why the rest? Why make him into a complete bland character? Also why the appearance change?
Why were some of the other character’s models changed? To make them smoother, more streamlined etc?
Why did Dulcey come into being? WHY?
Why make Antoine (if that is incorrect, the frenchman) into a terrible Jar-jar binks like character? He was becoming quite an interesting character.
What happened to Cluck, I quite liked him as a familiar.
Why did they change the setting for the power-ring pool? In season two it just looks too simplistic.
Also why did they change the power-ring animation, it looks kind of lame to me, over the top. Also, why does Sonic’s run seem to be exaggerated too? That too seems a bit lame.
Was it to make it more... dare I say it, ‘kid friendly’, whatever the hell that is. People have correctly commented that this season is a little lighter to the first one. That also I cannot fathom.
These small or indeed big things get on my nerves as I re-watch the series.

However, these are guesses and I'm not in the animation industry (I'm actually going into the gaming industry LOL)

Only a few of those changes have been given any explanation. Rotor was series editor Len Janson's least favorite character, so he was de-emphasised. Antoine was made more prominent for the opposite reason I think. There was a story going around that Sally was given a vest because some soccer mom complained, can't remember if it's true. Dulcy was added for the reason Perreault gave, to have another girl in the cast. As for the rest, we may never know.
One thing to keep in mind is that only a tiny fraction of the production team for Season 1 went on to produce Season 2 - the rest were largely new. New character designers, new music composers, new key animators, new background artists... these may also account for some changes, with everybody doing things a little differently. It's unfortunate things turned out that way, but it's interesting to look back on. Hope that helped you.

I THINK it was Len Jansen that didn't like Rotor and decided to downplay his character but I'm not positive.
Just to update I guess.
I think she was the product of ABC saying they wanted a character that would appeal to the female audience.
Hmm I don't think they did change Antoine that much. He's just as annoying in the first season as he is in the second IMO.
Ben always called him Screetch for some reason
Also why did they change the power-ring animation, it looks kind of lame to me, over the top. Also, why does Sonic’s run seem to be exaggerated too? That too seems a bit lame.
No idea.
I think the second season was much more dark and thought out. You have the whole wins and loses thing and each episode transitions into the next. The only reason this season seems lighter is because of the two episodes that had the Antoine shorts, which was, again the product of ABC being ... well ABC.

Ant.. I don't really notice a huge difference there. As for Rotor.. I am rather upset with season 2 Rotor.

I'll see you there.

I'll see you there.
At least I will have company... And I should be in bed.. I was going to bed a hour ago but I remembered that I had a beer in my fridge... somehow that over powered my need to sleep. Not that I need to get up in 4 hours or anything.
Anyways, continue on with how shitty S2 did things:

I still don't know why it feels as if I'm the only one who thinks the art quality went up, not down, in Season 2 (Rotor's and Antoine's redesigns notwithstanding).

Well, at least dulcy wasn't PINK.

"Lets make a character for the female audience... Has to be a girl... Oh, she's a dragon... and... Oh, she'll be pink an-! ... Stereotyping? Where? Fine... GREEEEEN.... and... OH, she'll have a HILARIOUS catchphrase! EVERYONE WILL LOVE HER!"
Yeah... The thing about Dulcy... She was kinda doomed from the start...
As for season two... I love the continuity, but it really did feel like they were going for a lighter approach, but aside from some re-designs and two certain episodes, I thought it was fine.

I liked Sally's change, adding the vest kinda added to her character. Sonic and Tails did not change one bit (except T2 kinda showed he was getting a little older and more mature and getting trained).
Yes Rotor's change was horrible. No comment needed there. And yes you guys hit the nail on the head, there was absolutely no need for Dulcy. Sally and Bunnie were dynamic female characters who could easily counter what we saw in Sonic, Rotor, Antoine and Tails. I guess the only good thing Dulcy added was another method of transportation for the FFs.
The biggest disappointment to me was the change in Bunnie. It was not her look and personality that changed. It was her role. In S1 she was involved in 7 episodes where she played a major part in the plot and/or mission. In S2, though she pretty much appeared in nearly every episode, I think she only had a major impact in 2 episodes. She went to Robotropolis only one time in S2 (Spyhog).
In S2, I think some good changes were made though. The relationship between Robotnik and Snivley was probably one of the best changes I saw. Even though Snively was still scared of Robotnik, it was shown that he did hate him and was awaiting or plotting Robotnik's fall. Robotnik's techology also improved in S2. The spy orbs were different, the Swatbots had personal hovercrafts, and the new megamuck units actually caught Sonic.

Antoine, on the other hand, had to annoy us for two seasons and I don't think he has any redeeming qualities at all. He was much more interesting in the very earliest issues of Archie Sonic (the only thing those issues did better than SatAM), where he was less of a coward with a poor command of English and more of a stuffy bureaucratic type, providing a good foil for Sonic -- the Bert to Sonic's Ernie.

Agreed. They gave Sniv a lot more personality rather than just the 'yessir' boring minion. The conversations between him and Robotnik in the second season are some of my favorite parts.
Season 2 pros for me:
-I actually like Antoine's S2 look better. I also don't find him any more annoying (cept for maybe in 'Cry of the Wolf'
-The continuity of the episodes...how they link together and lead up to Doomsday, VS S1's all over the place plots (dont' get me wrong, I like many of S1's episodes, I just think S2 was better story-wise)
-Sally's vest
Yeah, I think you and I are in the minority lol. I don't find her THAT annoying. I personally think she's supposed to be a child, maybe only a few years older than Tails. If they'd built up a friendship between those two it would've been nice (he could help her learn how to land or something
I also don't agree on S2 being THAT much lighter. You have the failed deroboticization in 'Sonic Conversion' and 'Blast to the Past' which is basically FF failure from beginning to end (besides saving Rosie I guess). You see the destruction of many of Lupe's people, Ari get thrown into the Void, Sally finds her father and then loses him... that's plenty of dark stuff I think.
Cons of S2:
Antoine shorts (Though I like the 'Odd Couple'
Rotor's redesign blows
Some sound bits and stuff were recycled and that's annoying
I did like Cluck, but I figure Sniv probably destroyed her behind Robotnik's back. Would've been funny to see a short about that!

A: Executive meddling.
B: Because if they kept all of the good stuff without adding in some bad stuff, it would've caused the primitive tvs that we all had at the time to explode, due to sheer awesomeness overload.
C: I agree that Ant doesn't seem to have been noticeably changed. I find him equally annoying in both seasons.
D: Another explanation for Dulcy could be that they wanted someone to make Ant look good by comparison.
