Len Janson created the SatAM world, but it was Ben who fleshed out the series. I believe if Ben wasn't the story editor of the second season, the show could of ended up being another video game tie-in series, nothing special. Looking back at the first season, there isn't anything exactly special. There's a couple of good episodes, but other then that, it's typical fodder, a new story every episode with little to no continuity. That changed when the second season started, having a story arc that more or less spanned the whole season. Not only that, but a good, solid story arc. To me, the second season is what helped make the show stand out from most other shows in the 90s. In my DVD collection, there isn't a whole lot of animated stuff from the 90s in there, but SatAM sits on the shelf, not hidden away out of sheer embarassment like some DVDs I have, like The Star Wars Holiday Special.
I never had the opportunity to talk to Ben, as the years have gone by I kind of drifted away from the fandom, but Ben always seemed like a cracking guy to me, becoming active in the fandom, answering questions and so forth. It's rare that people involved in shows like SatAM remain active after production has ceased and they talk to the fandom. Hearing the things Nique told me about Ben (as few as they were) was always fun to hear. And when the original Sea3on project was started, adapting Ben's original outlines for what would of been the 3rd season, it felt like an honor at being asked to write the scripts for a few issues. It is a shame we'll never get Ben's actual vision of what could of been a 3rd season.
I was saddened when I heard the news, and it's a shame that the world has lost a talented person, but Ben has a legacy that will go on, and that's more then what most get.
Cheers for all the entertainment Mr. Hurst.
"The Devil Inside is the new scam from director William Something Something. The movie stars actors and was edited on a computer. Somewhere. This movie is the latest film in a series of very low budget films designed to look like real movies! And be released in theaters to make a quick buck via a horribly off kilter budget to profit ratio that the general public seem to be stupidly unaware of! These films use to be called 'direct to video' but now they are called 'first run features'. These films then vanish from the theaters, like a rapist leaving the scene of a crime." - Mike Stoklasa of RedLetterMedia

"What are you looking at?"
"Tails."
*Looks up* "He's not up there."
"Yeah he is."
Anyway, more to come as I think of them
Very interesting!
I think it would have been awesome to have Tails harness the Power Ring like Sonic did.

So, it's little surprise that I, a kid who had spent the past year-plus dedicating my spare time to fully beating Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on my Sega Genesis (naturally ensuring that I saw what happened when you acquired all the Chaos Emeralds, after hearing murmurs about this "Super Sonic"...), would be chomping at the bit to see Sonic getting his own cartoon series on ABC.
The show had me hooked from the very first episode aired. I never expected to see Sonic's world look like that, to see Sonic working with a team, to see Dr. Robotnik as a tyrannical overlord, but it took all of five minutes for me to absolutely love it.
That said, Season Two is when my interest really reached a new level. I want to say I was approximately 8 years old or so, maybe 9, and for the first time in my life I had a TV series that I felt compelled to watch every single week, not because I simply liked the characters or the design of the show, but because I actually wanted to follow the overarching story that carried through the entire season. The concept of a show keeping you hooked like that was something I couldn't really comprehend until then.
Beyond that, I was also dealing with the concept of a show where, as far as I knew, any of the characters that I had grown attached to could possibly be killed off, or roboticized in this case. Looking back its a bit silly, but when the series finale came along and Sonic was in the Roboticizer in the Doomsday Project, little 8/9 year old me was actually getting a knot in his stomach thinking that Robotnik might actually win.
Ben Hurst deserves all the credit in the world for pulling that off. Cartoon writers like him helped usher in an age of animation where cartoons didn't feel the need so often to talk down to their audience, where writers actually put care and detail into their work, and crafted their own unique characters that didn't have to fit the mold of whatever toy or video game company was pushing the show. After a decade like the 80's, where most of the cartoons we had were not much beyond glorified toy commercials, seeing a series like SatAM was like watching a new era being born.
I owe him, and other writers of that time, a debt of gratitude. Animation has always meant a lot to me, but it was shows like SatAM, and shows I learned to appreciate later like ReBoot and Avatar: The Last Airbender, that showed me that animation can have a great meaning for you even when you reach adulthood. It's that development that's lead to me to work on pursuing voice acting, and feel passion for it, to hopefully one day play a role in the creation of an animated program that carries that kind of weight for another generation of viewers and admirers.
I may never have known or spoken to Ben Hurst, but that doesn't change what kind of impact his masterpiece had on me, and many others who loved it as much or more. He's gone away too soon, but still manages to leave behind a wonderful legacy and a legion of fans. We should all be that fortunate to be able to look back on our lives and accomplishments and know we've done and meant that much.

I didn't really know the guy, but I know he accomplished more in his field than I ever have in mine. I leave out half a chili-dog for his work in making a cartoon about Sonic the Hedgehog way, way better than it had to be.

When I first started watching Satam, I was amazed at how good this show is. When I finished watching all 26 episodes, I wanted more Satam.
Satam was a rare thing. It was a cartoon that was aimed at kids, yet unlike a lot of kids shows, it didn't talk down to kids. Alot of kids shows seem to be dumb down for children, and insult kids intelligence, yet Satam didn't. It was one of those shows that people of all ages can enjoy.
Ben, and the rest of the writers did a wonderful job creating a interesting world for Sonic, the Freedom Fighter's, and Dr. Robotnik to live in.
Ben(and all the writer's)created a wonderful show that will live on in the hearts of all it's fans.
R.I.P. Ben.

First of all, when Rob came home from work he had told me about this car accident he saw on the way to work. He said it was kind of a weird accident and he wasn't sure how it happened or anything. I don't remember all the details, but for some reason he seemed very interested in it.
Then last night, I had this dream where I had some extra money and my mom was going to help me donate it to something. She wanted me to give it to caner researchers or something but I told her I wanted to give it to people who study diabetes because that's what killed Ben. Now before I continue with the story, let me first say my mom is NOT like this. She is NOT a mean person, she's very kind, caring and usually only thinks about others. But for some reason in this dream she was waaaay ooc and said something like, "Oh he's dead, just get over it." And of course I was pissed and felt awful.
So in the dream I left and went around searching for a bank to put my money into because I didn't want mom to take it. Later on I returned home and she was very apologetic to me and said she had a surprise for me in the other room. So I went into the other room which was more of like a basement, but apparently I had built this cardboard house in this room. I looked at it and suddenly it disappeared and then reappeared, and I somehow knew this was Ben's doing. (It made sense in the dream anyway) I got really excited and was saying things like, "Oh Ben's here!" and things like that. Then... I can't really explain the next part, but even though I couldn't SEE him, I knew he had like come around the corner and we gave each other a hug. I remember saying I was so glad he was okay and I was just ecstatic he was there and okay. The weird thing is, even though I couldn't see him, I kinda knew what he looked like, and I remember him looking younger than he did in the videos....
There were other parts to this dream where I saw him again and asked him what heaven was like... but those parts didn't feel the same as the part above so I'm not going to discuss those.
Anyway when I first woke up from this dream I didn't think much of it. So I just went back to sleep. It wasn't until I got up today and started doing my usual routine that I really started thinking about it and it's like... I felt something from it. I guess I didn't want to really think this was something real or that had had visited me, and I just kinda figured that's all it was. Just a dream. I figured what I was feeling was still due to his death and what not.
Later on I told Rob about the dream and he kinda had this look on his face and he told me it was interesting that I had that dream. Then he asked if I remembered the car accident he saw and I said yes. He said when he drove past it he felt really bad, like he felt this despair from it. When he got to work he started thinking about things and for some reason started thinking about Ben. Now the way he put it was he said he "broadcast a message" to Ben asking him to never leave me. He basically said it was like sometimes you talk to the sky you know... I guess you could consider it a prayer if we were religious. But he didn't tell me this until AFTER I told him about the dream so... this really seems like it was something special.
It's also kind of funny too that the tattoo I have on my arm says "We'll meet again someday, just a dream away."
Now I don't believe in the bible god, I don't believe in things like heaven and hell and souls and what not. But I do believe there is something after death. I can't tell you what, but it's there. And, well, it's very comforting to see that Ben is doing just fine. He always talked about how he'd love to be younger again and it seems he got his wish. So yeah... I can't tell you what's out there after death, but there is something, and well I'm happy to report that whatever it is, Ben is doing just fine. He's very happy. I kinda knew this anyway.
But I wanted to share that with you guys just in case any of you were worried or wondering.
I just wanted to tell you that the hardest thing I've faced
Wasn't the teasing or the pain
It was convincing myself I wasn't stupid, strange, or lame
And helping others do the same.

While we're on the subject, has anyone had any Sonic-related dreams? The only one I can remember was when I was at a festival and I noticed Sally was on stage with a few other characters, but sadly I never managed to approach her. There are some dreams you wish you just won't wake up from.

Sonic and Sally are investigating a misty graveyard for unknown reasons. They decide to split up, leading Sonic to one side of the graveyard and Sally to the other. Once they've split up, Sally falls into a sinkhole near one of the graves, containing within it the entombed body of an ancient and evil Queen. The Queen is sealed within a glass coffin (think the kind seen at the end of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves"), and it is upon this coffin that Sally lands. This causes the vengeful spirit of the Queen to possess Sally's body and take control. When Sonic comes looking for her, Sally bursts out from underground, wielding incredible power due to the ghost inside of her and attempts to destroy Sonic. Not wanting to hurt Sally but knowing he has to do something, Sonic races through the graveyard, narrowly avoiding Sally's attacks (she is now capable of shooting energy blasts from her hands). Eventually, Sonic hits on an idea, pulling out a power ring from his backpack and leaping up at Sally, causing them both to be enveloped when the ring's energy activates. The ring's power drives the Queen's ghost out of Sally's body, and the two decide to leave the graveyard as quick as possible.
And there you have it. My Sonic dream.

More than can be counted. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the two most recurring element of my dreams. (The other one is finding my childhood friend, Brandon Woodman.) It usually takes the form of the hedgehog himself for some reason. I'd rather dream about Sally or something
My reaction to either a Sonic dream or a Brandon dream is always "Not AGAIN..."

Since furrykef mentioned recurring dreams, I also have two dreams that I experience often. The first is finding an arcade cabinet of Marvel VS. Capcom 2. This was a few years ago when I was strapped for cash and desperately wanted to get my hands on a copy of my favourite game. When I later managed to emulate it on chankast (a Dreamcast emulator), the dreams stopped. The second reccuring dream is experiencing the end of the world. Usually it's by a meteor impact or some other cataclysmic event. Think 2012 meets Armaggedon. I can only hope these are just dreams...

Yes. I posted it at some point on one of previous forum incarnations... To summarize: Just because someone saves the heroes, that doesn't make them too heroic a person to splatter a badguy all over his machine controls with a very big gun.
