I've been on a bit of a TMBG fix as of late, as this band is right up there with The Doors on my list of favorite "What The Hell Have I Been Missing All These Years!?" artists. Surely a lack of TMBG in my childhood (exposure through the excellent Tiny Toons music videos notwithstanding) can at least partly explain some of my deficiencies today.

I didn't know you'd done those, Rocky! Ace!
Anyway, I'm listening to Ring Road by Underworld.
It's a brilliant piece from our two boys - an unpretentious rap full of Underworld's typical rough-around-the-edges Essex wisdom, balancing the drabness of everyday life:
I didn't know where it went.
I went through;
I came out in this shopping mall where
boys wear England shirts
and West Ham shirts and Arsenal shirts,
and the boys from Dagenham wear jackets
called Harlem,
grinning at the door at the
Ann Summers sex shop.
It's St. Georges day
and all the old people smile;
the young people look hungry
looking for a new door.
with being in love, without being sentimental or silly:
and another England shirt out in the sun.
pring falls in pink
on the blacktop and cracks.
Black and yellow tape covers the scene of a break in.
And every time I think of you I get my peace back.
Beautiful - like so much of their stuff. Warm and full of Karl and Rick's working-class good humour. This track is rough around the edges, the way rap should be, but without the bitches, ho's and bling.
If rap were more like that I'd be more into it.
