Boy, I hated the thing. Still do, too. The dubbing was crap, I didn't like the excessively Japanese style (yeah, I know Sonic is Japanese, but...), I especially didn't like the resemblance to DBZ, and the whole thing just seemed infantile. I don't get how an adult could enjoy it at all. (Adults obviously weren't the target audience, but I think a good cartoon should at least hold an adult's attention, 'cause parents often watch movies with their kids. And remember, parents are where VHS/DVD sales come from!) It just seemed like a total train wreck.
The worst part is, thinking I'd get something at least vaguely resembling SatAM or its dark style, I made the (in retrospect, very stupid) decision to watch it in the den with my grandmother and uncle. Well, I didn't really expect them to watch it, but they were there. My uncle got fed up with it and walked out halfway through, and when it was over, my grandmother told me, "I think you really need to grow up, Kev" -- as if that kind of crap was what I wanted to watch. It felt like being punched in the gut. (Later my uncle added that if I wanted to watch something like that, I could watch DBZ... they didn't seem to comprehend that it wasn't what I wanted to watch at all.)
Haha wow man that sucks. Yeah I bought the sonic OVA VHS as well, watched it exactly once and never have again.
Though before that I'd had a similar experience with AoStH as a kid, I found an AoStH VHS in goodwill and I thought "Yaaay! My favorite cartoon that no one remembers!" popped it in to a huuuuuuge disappointment. I hated AoStH for a long time as a result lol. Not as bad as yours but, still massive letdown.
...Maybe that is the whole recipe of life, is to be in on the joke. Because life is a joke and if you're not in on it you're out.
But if you're in on it, you can make it." - Vincent Price
