Isn't gameplay the most important aspect to a video game? For RPGs, 1st and 3rd person shooters, story is important. For platforming games, most of them have shallow and one dimensional stories with the exception of Jak & Daxter and Ratchet and Clank. Sonic in the games was just about speed and platforming to begin with. Sure you need story to progress the game, but it's not always the case.
Don't get me wrong, gameplay is very important to me.
If you can't enjoy playing the game, a solid story in it won't help too much.
But I'm very big on story depth as well.
I think one of the best games to have a mix of both was Paper Mario: Thousand year door.
That was just such a well made game.
It was one of those that thought outside the box games of Nintendo.
Wish Sega would have done something like that, but actually pulled it off successfully.
They had way too many out of the box ideas that bombed big time.
