@  furrykef : (25 July 2015 - 03:35 AM)

When was that? Depending on when it was, it might have been a DNS issue. Those should be gone now.

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 10:10 PM)

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 10:10 PM)

Red said he couldnt get one

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 11:25 AM)

Also I still have to figure out how to set up our e-mail accounts on the new host.

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 08:19 AM)

As soon as I figure out how to restore it. Sorry, I know I said it'd be done by now, but I didn't expect to have to put up with this DNS crap and other issues that popped up.

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 07:56 AM)

So when's the black theme coming back??

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 07:56 AM)

"Should"

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 07:27 AM)

That DNS took longer to propagate properly than I thought it would. *Now* we should be back for good, though.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 08:48 PM)

Or it might be because Bluehost *finally* got around to that server wipe (one week after we'd asked for it) and that wiped out our DNS settings. I'm not sure which and I don't really care. In any case, we've severed our last ties with Bluehost, so this will not happen again.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 08:08 PM)

Looks like Bluehost yanked our DNS since our hosting account expired. That's why the site went down a while ago. But as you can see, it's fixed now.

@  Misk : (23 July 2015 - 04:55 PM)

No, they do not.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 04:27 AM)

The goggles do nothing?

@  Misk : (22 July 2015 - 05:50 PM)

My eyes.

@  furrykef : (22 July 2015 - 12:24 PM)

Looks like forum uploads might have been broken since last night. That should be fixed now too.

@  furrykef : (22 July 2015 - 01:33 AM)

Heh, whoops! Server went down for a few mins when I borked the config. Looks like it's back up now.

@  Uncle Ben : (21 July 2015 - 09:09 PM)

It looked like a napkin

@  ILOVEVHS : (21 July 2015 - 09:04 PM)

Fan-fuckin-tastic.

@  furrykef : (21 July 2015 - 08:25 PM)

As for the beaver picture while the forum was down, I think Tim drew it. On a napkin.

@  furrykef : (21 July 2015 - 08:24 PM)

No kiddin' about that "Finally!", Shadow. I am *so mad* at Bluehost for never responding to our support ticket. I submitted it early Friday morning and they *still* haven't answered it!

@  Uncle Ben : (21 July 2015 - 06:37 PM)

Maybe he did that himself

Crikey, twelve panels this week! I know I clamored for more panels per page, but I didn't expect Salamander to include this much. That's a higher number than I've ever worked with, because it ends up making the page layout look cramped.

Agreed. Some breathing room is needed here, my eyes are all over the place and it's hard to pay attention on one panel at a time. This could have easily been two pages.

So, we're gonna find out who this hoodie-guy is?

I'm just trying to get it over quicker so people can see your short sad.gif

Yeah, I know, pacing is all over the place. I've been learning just how much prep work is needed before finishing- one of those things I don't get until I've made that mistake first.
And yeah, I've been quiet about the pages for awhile.. Not that I'm ignoring anybody, just not feeling that self confident lately. I'm no less dedicated to Sea3on, just sometimes I draw and nothing looks good enough, and it feels like I'm not getting any better. I dunno.
That aside I like my lineart for this page. I took a slower and more careful approach and it looks a lot neater, to me at least.

If that's the reason then by all means give us twenty panels next week!

BTW, I had asked you another question last week. Do you have any inspirations for this comic besides SatAM?

A couple here and there. One Piece is a big one, I'm a huge fan and I look to it as an example of really expressive comic panels.
Also the comic "Mad Love", which has really crisp and expressive lineart, and perfect layout and pacing.

I like really well drawn movement and facial expressions, stuff that's not generically pretty looking but has a lot of character to it.

You have good taste, Salamander. Mad Love is one of my favourite Batman stories and ended up creating a new respect for Harley Quinn. Since the artwork was based on the animated series, it was no surprise to see it adapted into an episode.

Sorry to hear that you're feeling down, Salamander, I know I don't comment much, but you're doing good and solid work. smile.gif You've got the skill, the rest's just experience. And you've gotten heaps better since you started out - and you were good to begin with.

It's incredible easy to underestimate the work that goes into illustrating comic, especially when you're just starting out. I know I've done it too. Drawing the pictures itself is relativly easy, but forging them into a cohesive whole, that's where it gets complicated. And yes, half the work's the frigging preperation - which can be very frustrating.

A comic's kinda like a magic trick, it works best when all the prepwork cannot be seen.

How I do it:

When working on ToC, I usually do the panel layout and rough sketches of a whole scene/chapter at once. Only when that's done, I start with the proper drawing. I pencil page per page and panel per panel, but only when I already have the basic layouts including space for speech bubbles completed. I found proper speech-bubble placement important, because they're basically the thread that guides the eye over the page - could be just a personal tick, though.

Granted, I'm doing writing and layout at the same time, but I found it also helps alot when drawing from scripts.

But you know what? You'll suss out a method that works for you, Salamander, simply because a) you're good and learn quick enough and cool.gif you've stuck to it for over fifty pages, and those first fifty are the hardest. Most artists would've thrown the towel by now.

Ah chalcara, your lovely presence has reminded me that I still haven't read Tales of a Hero. I asked John if he could dig it up from his hard drive, but he never replied. Do you think you could post it in the Creative Corner or something? Please please pretty please with whipped cream and a cherry on top?

I really feel I ought to take some of the heat for the pacing problems here; I haven't been as instructive regarding page set-up with salamander as I probably should have been, and I promise that problem will be rectified in the future.

Bah! I hate to admit it, but for once Gojira is not at fault here. It's not his place to tell Salamander how she should divide the pages. Jim Doe tried to do that in the scripts he wrote and a lot of the time the separations turned out to be completely unbalanced. Some pages would be overflowing with content while others would be practically vacuous. But I don't blame him for that; he can't know how much space is required for each page until he's drawn a storyboard first. Even when I write my own script and have a firm idea of how the comic should look, I always have to make adjustments when I commit it to paper. So don't worry about trying to split up the comic, Gojira, that's Salamander's job.

As far as who decides on the pacing, I do know that I'm the one who ultimately visualizes the pages and lays them all out- but at the same time I'll be communicating better with Gojira in the future, to make sure we are both on the same page (so to speak) when it comes to how everything should look.

That might help. Professional scripts range from "this is what happens on the story and this is the dialogue, you do the rest!" to minuteous panel-to-panel breaks including instructions for perspective, closeups and wideshots, depending on the author. Gojiras seem to be former, which works too - but if you have him at hand, by io, do try shake the info on what he deems the important parts of a story out of him. If you DO share for example the layout sketches with each other, Gojira even might have the oppertunity to shorten some of the more massive dialogue, too, or help shaping the story flow in other ways, too.

But you know: Bah, writers! Half the time they expect us to read their thoughts. wink.gif

Whoops! No surprise revelation this week either. I'm starting to think that Mr. Cloak has no face. Maybe he's really a Jawa. Oo-tini!

Looks like Salamander has decided to extend the chapter for another two pages in order to spread the panels out a bit more. It makes the comic easier on the eyes. I almost forgot about Sally and Bunnie until Sonic mentioned them in the final panel. We've been missing out on their feminine charm for a while now, haven't we? I also wonder what Naugus is planning with that mecha suit. It looks like he wants to make his own Iron Monger costume.
