I agree on Amy's role. However, SatAM came out only 5 days before Sonic CD. I think it's reasonable to assume that the two characters were developed concurrently.
In the English manuel of Sonic CD they call Amy, Sally.
It was an awesome mistake.

I thought they were just trying to make it seem like Sally, to cash in on the failing western continuity.
Anyway, back to topic:
SatAM: Sonsal, though I prefer them having a platonic friendship by far.
Games: Sonamy. Onesided Sonic/Ricky is cute too though, but I prefer Ricky/Pocky (the rabbit).
AoStH: Sonsal. For some reason that's the only continuity where I actually like it; the AoStH!Sonic and Sally personalities clash so cutely.
Archie Comics: ..SonAmy honestly.
Sonic the Comic: SonAmy.
I've never been fond of the Archie's interpretation of Sally, and I like Sonic and Sally as friends in SatAM. I always found their romance odd and a little forced.

Which is actually how a lot of romances in cartoons and movies go. A good modern example would be Tangled. They are put in a circumstance where they are paired up together, forced to overcome obsticles they can only achieve through working together, which causes them to develope feelings for each other.
Which is cute in movies, comics, games, and cartoons, but doesn't neccisarily make it work in real life.
In the long lost Season 3 Sally and Sonic's relationship would have been built more upon as there would be rivals for their affection as Ben mentioned.

(But then wouldn't we need an icon of Uncle Chuck kissing Tails?
Uncalled for
The WHOLE of Tangled felt rushed a forced but that's another story.
I don't obsess over pairings but it is fun to think about. Either they got something going on or nothing doing in that department. It says a lot about their personality.
Though I'm mostly biased to Sally, I am open to either one depending on how well written it is. I've seen both work pretty nicely.
The old school Amy in the Archie comic was actually very sweet before her SA makeover. She's the incarnation I'd go with.

But keep the adventure going. The characters are young and have time; that's part of the charm. If we get too hot and heavy, it just feels gross.

In SatAM i dont think a relationship would work with Sally, They are really good friends and run the risk of "making things wierd". I might be alone here but it will most likely be a one night thing in the heat of a spectacular victory.
AoSTH.............. He has Tails
Sonic theComic is the only continuity where i wouldnt mind seeing Sonic get with Amy, she is smart, strong minded, has leadership qualities, flirts with Sonic mainly to get a rise out of him and for a bit of fun, and its even hinted in the online continuation that Sonic is scared she will move on. It was made about the time SatAM first aired so i personally think they wrote her as Sally (who is in STC but she is modeled on her sprite from the Genesis/Megadrive games and NOT the one we know and love) as this was about 7 years before her redesign and Sonic Adventure when Amy cranked the stalker dial to 11.

*snerk* I can see that happening. They probably both realize the guy isn't worth fighting over and look towards greener pastures.
Personally, I consider myself leaning neither towards SonAmy nor SonSally...because I believe as long as the story makes it plausible, any pairing can work. Heck, a long time ago, I've actually seen a story with a Sonic/ROBOTNIK pairing, and the way the relationship was explored it actually made sense!

Im on the fence on pairings, though some work with certain continuities, But if the written right any pairing could work. A while back i read a Tails/Amy one lol

Overall, just make sure it's a good story. If a character exists only to be someone's love interest, it's becomes intensely annoying/boring.
Now I like what authors like Netraptor did with Sally and Sonic. The woman has been writing for as long as I can remember. She tends to blend SEGA and SatAM, taking the best of both worlds which is my ideal. Sonic's home base will be Knothole but he will still venture around in game adapts, which were quite epic. She even turn SONIC freaking HEROES into a novel.
Sally felt more balanced and not as possessive as the comics. And by the time Sonic Heroes came around, Sonic actually started chasing after HER for a change (in his own fumbling way). (Amy freaked him out because he preferred to do the chasing in the relationship). But the romance elements were more indirect and only a PART of the plot. There were so many other things going on so it feels more well rounded. I highly recommend NR as a fic writer.
Best of all, NO SONIC AS KING. She actually made Mobotropolis turn into a Democracy and Sally became the Minister of Defense (occasionally working with G.U.N.). And she had a time travel story where Sonic went into the future and Mobotropolis was run by a communist dictator. Sonic was married with kids but they were forced back into hiding again and the government tried to take his kids away
She even made a hilarious story about Knuckles hiring lawyers in some legal battle. After a while, Metal Sonic went independent from Robotnik and made money electronically through the stock market to purchase the resources he needed. All these little tidbits made me LOL and they made perfect sense.
*end tangent*

I think I'll have a look at NRs work. I'm brainstorming with a friend to make a rebooted SatAM universe that also integrates SEGA and some Archie and Fleetway characters but in a more mature tone (Some violence, somewhat realistic storyline, foul language nothing too explicit though) and might post it up here when/if i finish it, anyways a bit off topic there...
I like Sally but in the comics she annoyed me loads with her attitude to Sonic, Especially when he came back from space. I actually felt sorry for Mina too, poor thing, the panel when she sees them kiss and it looks shattered got to me.

Both. It's her website and she is one of the authors listed in the fanfic section. She has about 32 stories.
DLTN, by all means! She's is definitely worth checking out. She has a couple original characters in there but they don't rob the spotlight. And she doesn't just drop them in out of no where leaving you to ask "Who the hell is this??" They are introduced and developed as well. I normally don't care for fan characters but I actually like these guys.

Sonic/Chicken
It's essentially their way of thumbing their nose at the idea that Sonic HAS to be paired with someone since no particular pairing is right or wrong. So...they just picked a pairing that was pretty much under the category of "none of the above".

Netraptor is one of the best Sonic fan authors and one of the ones I hope gets a job a at Archie inthe near future

Archie: SonSal
Games: SonEggman
I guess I would naturally pick Sally for Sonic over Amy because Amy just comes off as too fangirly for me and seems like she only likes Sonic because he's a hero. I know Amy has some positive traits like um... she values friendship over the well being of the world and all, but it doesn't really seem like a good match for Sonic.
It helps for Sally's case that she and Sonic are both childhood friends and child Sally loves frolicking around with her commoner friends instead of attending to her princess studies =P Amy.... just pulls a tarot card and she makes a destined meeting with Sonic happen.
