Apparently it's not the first in the series, but it reads like picking up a standalone story. I'm only three chapters in, but I can tell I'm going to like it.
"I could tell my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and a radio." ~Rodney Dangerfield
"My luck is so bad that if I bought a cemetery, people would stop dying." ~Ed Furgol
"Bad taste is simply saying the truth before it should be said." ~Mel Brooks
"Walruses are among the only mammals in the world that do not process liquid waste via a bladder organ. Once digested, liquid waste is absorbed through the lining of the small intestine and secreted through the skin." That's why people ignored Rotor." ~anonymous
"If there were a building that stood for grammatical integrity, your post would be the plane that crashed into it." ~ThePeaGuy
"NO! No summoning evil gods! Bad Mel!" ~Crais Sewell, Mimana Iyar Chronicle

Also just watched all of "The Stand" today, which has encouraged me to read the Stephen King novel when I finished Maia. Thought it was funny that the guy who spread the superflu at the beginning of the story was a soldier named Campion.

Gonna finish Maia tomorrow, probably. I've taken way longer to read this book than I should have, but it's all good.
I'm trying to decide what to read next, considering I'm moving away from Richard Adams now that i've read all I want to read from him, unless he's secretly writing another Beklan/Watership.
I need help deciding where to go next. Does anyone know anything about "Guardians of Ga'Hoole?" I saw the amazing trailer for the upcoming film, and thought I ought to read the books, but I didn't know if they were good enough to be enjoyed by adults. If they're well written stories, I'll take to them. I can't move back into the pop fiction anymore.

The stories taking some interesting turns, but there are a few yawnworthy cliches in there and she seems a bit too obsessed by what people are wearing and their hair and eye colour. She's playing quite a few tropes straight with no apparent sense of irony, and some of her prose could do with a polish.
I think my tastes are getting more refined for this kind of thing. This book doesn't have the delectable turn of phrase that even some of my fellows on FP have.

Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris.
Hmmm...I got those Ebooks off Ebay a while back but haven't touched them yet. I'm kind of wondering if just renting the TV series would be more enjoyable.

Currently reading Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata (a fiction book intended to teach Latin), also written entirely in Latin, which I'll need to get through before I take on Caesar.

just finished Lee Child's 61 hours. Stayed up for two days reading it, and couldn't sleep after the ending because the author is EVIL. I'd recommend checking out the Jack Reacher series if you aren't familiar with it, especially if you like mystery novels that are a bit on the gritty side (sans cliche detective). Having read all his novels so far, I haven't been disappointed with any of them.

I don't know. I'm not generally that into vampire stories, they're just not my kind of monster. Underworld was okay but past that... I'd say that Ms. Harris' storyline seems like a better version of Twilight, but it's still quite Twilightish.
