@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 11:25 AM)

Also I still have to figure out how to set up our e-mail accounts on the new host.

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 08:19 AM)

As soon as I figure out how to restore it. Sorry, I know I said it'd be done by now, but I didn't expect to have to put up with this DNS crap and other issues that popped up.

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 07:56 AM)

So when's the black theme coming back??

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 07:56 AM)

"Should"

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 07:27 AM)

That DNS took longer to propagate properly than I thought it would. *Now* we should be back for good, though.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 08:48 PM)

Or it might be because Bluehost *finally* got around to that server wipe (one week after we'd asked for it) and that wiped out our DNS settings. I'm not sure which and I don't really care. In any case, we've severed our last ties with Bluehost, so this will not happen again.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 08:08 PM)

Looks like Bluehost yanked our DNS since our hosting account expired. That's why the site went down a while ago. But as you can see, it's fixed now.

@  Misk : (23 July 2015 - 04:55 PM)

No, they do not.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 04:27 AM)

The goggles do nothing?

@  Misk : (22 July 2015 - 05:50 PM)

My eyes.

@  furrykef : (22 July 2015 - 12:24 PM)

Looks like forum uploads might have been broken since last night. That should be fixed now too.

@  furrykef : (22 July 2015 - 01:33 AM)

Heh, whoops! Server went down for a few mins when I borked the config. Looks like it's back up now.

@  Uncle Ben : (21 July 2015 - 09:09 PM)

It looked like a napkin

@  ILOVEVHS : (21 July 2015 - 09:04 PM)

Fan-fuckin-tastic.

@  furrykef : (21 July 2015 - 08:25 PM)

As for the beaver picture while the forum was down, I think Tim drew it. On a napkin.

@  furrykef : (21 July 2015 - 08:24 PM)

No kiddin' about that "Finally!", Shadow. I am *so mad* at Bluehost for never responding to our support ticket. I submitted it early Friday morning and they *still* haven't answered it!

@  Uncle Ben : (21 July 2015 - 06:37 PM)

Maybe he did that himself

@  Shadow : (21 July 2015 - 05:25 PM)

Say, who made the cute picture of Beaver Chief?

@  Shadow : (21 July 2015 - 05:24 PM)

Finally!

@  RedMenace : (21 July 2015 - 05:02 PM)

Woooo! The site's back up! Three cheers for Kef!

As soon as I saw the ads for the movie, the concept horrified me. But it makes me wonder about its terms, and how many people would actually bite on it. So, in the spirit of the classic game show Card Sharks, I pose the following poll question to the masses:

In the movie "The Box", a financially-strapped couple is offered $1,000,000 at the push of a button, but if they do it, someone who the couple doesn't know will die. The question we pose to you is: If someone offered you $1,000,000, but at the cost of a stranger's life, would you take the money?

Stay Way Past Cool!

Wasn't this movie an episode of Tales from the Darkside or one of those type of shows?

No. I wouldn't. Under no circumstances.

Goes straight against my ethics.

I wouldn't. I don't want sudden wealth anyhow, and I don't think I could live with myself knowing I was selfish enough to take someone else's life for my own profit.

Quite the dilemma. A million dollars can secure you and your loved ones for the rest of your life. In doing so you are denying someone else the rest of their life. No thanks. I already kind of have blood on my hands with my last deployment (and I was paid well for it). Really can't do that again.

A million dollars at the price of someone else's life? No. And I like earning my own money, so even if it was freely offered without someone having to die for it, I'd still turn it down.

Quite a dilemma for me. Not because I value both money and human life, but in fact because I have contempt for both money and human life. tongue.gif

If I got the box, I'd probably do nothing out of sheer apathy. But I'd probably keep the box where nobody else can use it, 'cause, well, it is easy to value human life more than $1,000,000 if you're not the guy who's gonna get the $1,000,000.

What are you, nuts? I like earning money too, but if someone wanted to hand me a million dollars without any strings attached there would be no fucking hesitation accepting. icon_cheers.gif

It was an episode of the 80s Twilight Zone, as well as a short story. It's been adapted a few times.

Now being a full-fledged Hollywood movie, though, I'm sure its moral message won't have nearly as much relevance to it. They tend to screw those things up for things like "action" and "excitement".

A million dollars for the death of a stranger... Yep. Id do it. Set my daughter up for good school, good life..

But if it was a million dollars and could be anyone, including someone in my family... then no.

I don't know about the movie, but old episode version, it was someone they assure you will never know. And once it's done, the box is given to someone they assure you that doesn't know you.

Wasn't there a sneaky twist in one of the versions where
Spoiler:
the person who dies is the protagonist's husband/wife, and the reasoning was that their relationship was so strained that they didn't really "know" each other?
I'm not sure if that really happened, but you've always got to be careful of semantics, especially if you're in a twilight zone episode..

The twist *I*'d add is that the person that'll die is the guy/gal who used the damn box last. Easy enough to do under constraints outlayed by VladYvhv.

Fair's fair. ;)

That is the implication, without stating it outright. The uncertainty the former user has to live with for the rest of her life is what drives the point home when the episode ends. The original short story was a bit different, taking the route salamander was thoughtful to include in spoiler tags (a route that was far less inspiring or thought-provoking, in my opinion). As for the film...well, it's feature-length, so Hollywood will need to find ways to pad it out.

Has anyone actually seen it yet?

It would all depend.

1. If it truly was someone I did not know even existed.
2. If I would be held accountable for the death or not.
3. If am rendered immune to another users use of it and/or the box is only available to me and me alone,
4. And if the above conditions are met, then the final condition will depend on a coin toss.
