...Maybe that is the whole recipe of life, is to be in on the joke. Because life is a joke and if you're not in on it you're out.

Meh, Eastman hasn't cared for at least a decade (Laird bought out his interest from 2000 - 08) I think he's running Heavy Metal Magazine or somesuch now. And Laird is getting up in the years. Probably just wants to retire. No doubt he'll be able to do that comfortably enough now
I think the American comics industry would be a whole lot better if all of the creators owned their creations until/if they decided to sell them.

I miss the Archie TMNT comic series. From start to finish those issues, and the themes they played with, simply rocked. Archie Sonic can weep in the corner somewhere.

Yep, Eastman's doing Heavy Metal. (I found this out a while back when I thought about writing for them, not having actually read an issue of it yet. I changed my mind when I realized that Heavy Metal is much more about pictures than text, so there was probably no point unless I wanted to illustrate the stories myself...)
Anyway, there's the point that Eastman & Laird weren't really responsible for the image of TMNT that most of us know and love -- the 80's/90's cartoon series -- in any case. Hell, they didn't even create Bebop & Rocksteady, and those are iconic characters. In fact, their original vision of TMNT was largely a parody of cartoon animal superheroes; the cartoon series basically turned it into the very thing they were making fun of. Not that this was really a bad thing (though it is pretty ironic, and funny), since at least it was good.
It does.

That doesn't even make sense.

I got my memories of TMNT like most others and I'm not gonna say every single one of those memories was a brilliant one. Look at some of the gimmicks they did with the toys, like the Star Trek Turtles, or the sports themed ones, some really fucking horrid ideas were used. I'll give props to Playmates Toys for making the line last as long as it did, but damn some of those gimmicks crap.
And the original animated series? That fucker ran for 10 seasons! I've been buying the sets and remembering some episodes I thought was craptastic, especially around the halfway point when I stopped watching it as a kid. Then I have a clear memory of watching a couple of the later season episodes (seasons 8-10) and actually thought this stuff was better then the older stuff.
Then there was The Next Mutation, less said about that the better.
The movies? Hell I love the first one, but even as a kid I thought the second one was lame. Wasn't until the late 90s when I saw the third one and boy was that absolute shit on a crusty roll. But the fourth was a drastic improvement and I saw it twice in cinemas.
And the 4Kids series I've been enjoying. Like John I haven't seen a whole lot of it, because there were only a few DVDs released over here, but that show is pretty damn bitching.
And as for the upcoming Turtles Forever DVD movie, I like the idea and am looking forward to it.
But as for what Nick plans on doing with the series, how about waiting to see how and what they do with the franchise before getting into a total hissyfit and claiming it will be shit or ruin the whole TMNT franchise, because its already have its fair share of bullshit.
"The Devil Inside is the new scam from director William Something Something. The movie stars actors and was edited on a computer. Somewhere. This movie is the latest film in a series of very low budget films designed to look like real movies! And be released in theaters to make a quick buck via a horribly off kilter budget to profit ratio that the general public seem to be stupidly unaware of! These films use to be called 'direct to video' but now they are called 'first run features'. These films then vanish from the theaters, like a rapist leaving the scene of a crime." - Mike Stoklasa of RedLetterMedia

Also damn, you just reminded me. I don't usually collect toys but the Universal Monsters TMNT's from '93 were soooooo sweet.
Especially glow in the dark Mummy Raph. I'm going to have to get those back someday.
