@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 11:25 AM)

Also I still have to figure out how to set up our e-mail accounts on the new host.

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 08:19 AM)

As soon as I figure out how to restore it. Sorry, I know I said it'd be done by now, but I didn't expect to have to put up with this DNS crap and other issues that popped up.

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 07:56 AM)

So when's the black theme coming back??

@  Uncle Ben : (24 July 2015 - 07:56 AM)

"Should"

@  furrykef : (24 July 2015 - 07:27 AM)

That DNS took longer to propagate properly than I thought it would. *Now* we should be back for good, though.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 08:48 PM)

Or it might be because Bluehost *finally* got around to that server wipe (one week after we'd asked for it) and that wiped out our DNS settings. I'm not sure which and I don't really care. In any case, we've severed our last ties with Bluehost, so this will not happen again.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 08:08 PM)

Looks like Bluehost yanked our DNS since our hosting account expired. That's why the site went down a while ago. But as you can see, it's fixed now.

@  Misk : (23 July 2015 - 04:55 PM)

No, they do not.

@  furrykef : (23 July 2015 - 04:27 AM)

The goggles do nothing?

@  Misk : (22 July 2015 - 05:50 PM)

My eyes.

@  furrykef : (22 July 2015 - 12:24 PM)

Looks like forum uploads might have been broken since last night. That should be fixed now too.

@  furrykef : (22 July 2015 - 01:33 AM)

Heh, whoops! Server went down for a few mins when I borked the config. Looks like it's back up now.

@  Uncle Ben : (21 July 2015 - 09:09 PM)

It looked like a napkin

@  ILOVEVHS : (21 July 2015 - 09:04 PM)

Fan-fuckin-tastic.

@  furrykef : (21 July 2015 - 08:25 PM)

As for the beaver picture while the forum was down, I think Tim drew it. On a napkin.

@  furrykef : (21 July 2015 - 08:24 PM)

No kiddin' about that "Finally!", Shadow. I am *so mad* at Bluehost for never responding to our support ticket. I submitted it early Friday morning and they *still* haven't answered it!

@  Uncle Ben : (21 July 2015 - 06:37 PM)

Maybe he did that himself

@  Shadow : (21 July 2015 - 05:25 PM)

Say, who made the cute picture of Beaver Chief?

@  Shadow : (21 July 2015 - 05:24 PM)

Finally!

@  RedMenace : (21 July 2015 - 05:02 PM)

Woooo! The site's back up! Three cheers for Kef!

Okay this worries me:
http://i20.photobuck...6297_screen.jpg

Because it does NOT look like Sonic... but the trailer is all right:
http://kotaku.com/53...-new-2d-hd-game

Thoughts? I'm waiting for screenshots or some such

EDIT
I take it back, it's the Sonic 1 Sonic:

I just wanted to tell you that the hardest thing I've faced
Wasn't the teasing or the pain
It was convincing myself I wasn't stupid, strange, or lame
And helping others do the same.

Eh.. Looks like they are just trying to go back to the original Sonic games that people thought were good. Minus me of course cause I was never big with Sega.

This will.... 1. get canceled in development 2. only be released on the PSP 3. have some other calamity befall it.

Either that or have really, really bad level design. I've only played a few of the original games. (Only Sonic 1 in the past 7 or 8 years probably) And thought they were alright. But I have my doubts developers, particularly SEGA, could still pull off that kind of simple elegance.
A good 2D map is almost always deceptively complex, and who;s left at Sega that can design one to match the originals?
I will be rooting for this project however, since if it succeeds other companies could follow suit. Might even seen an old-old school 2D (Pre-SOTN) Castlevania. -IT COULD HAPPEN!

I find this particularly interesting in light of SEGA's recent comments about pleasing oldschool fans, something this trailer is definitely trying to do, what with the old-school FX, the classic "SEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAA" cry at the start, and of course the promise of a new HD 2D Sonic game, something a lot of oldschool fans have been salivating for for some time now. Until we see/hear more, I'll keep my optimism in check personally; Ratty's fears that SEGA's staff simply does not have the talent to pull something like this off anymore are well-founded. At the same time, it's definitely the sort of news I'd want to hear for this series, so here's hoping.

My worry is that the game will be closer to Sonic Advance/Rush than the Genesis games. The handheld games kinda missed the point-the originals were just as much about puzzles and platforming as they were about speed. Sonic Advance annoyed me because it seemed like the whole point was to press right to make it to the end of the level, and then die because you missed a split second jump. Not fun.
So I dunno, I'm not holding my breath on this one, but it's nice to see them make an effort.

I felt the original Sonic Advance was closer in spirit to the originals than the subsequent titles that followed.

I also liked the Advance, and Rush series. Hearing this, and seeing the trailer, I sure hope it comes true. I have been waiting for an old-school like Sonic game for quite some time now. Let's just hope that this one's a lot better than what we think.

I can't beleive I'm saying this, but I'm excited. I don't know how those bastards with all their past failures have done it, but I'm excited. How do they do it?

If they really are taking this seriously, I wish them godspeed. I reamain cautiously optimistic. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I dunno. I'm not particularly fond of 2D games unless they're the classics. I'm more interested in 3D, but we'll see how this game turns out.

Ive always wondered how the terrain was made in the Sonic Game Universe... I mean... was it natural? Or was Robotnic stupid enough to build a huge trail with loops and fill it full of power rings. Then have it lead directly to him.

Err sorry about that guys but I guess that artwork is fake. I saw it on another Sonic site and they'd got it from another Sonic site and it was being passed around but it turns out it's not real. Bummer

I gather you mean that screencap you posted was fake, not the trailer?

I can see what they're trying to do with the trailer and it has something of the feel of the first two or three Sonic games, but they're trying too hard, I think. This is one of the pitfalls with modern games, I think: the graphics have got so good and the gameplaying community are so used to almost lifelike characters and textures and landscapes that trying to make something like an old school Sonic game might well be going too many steps back.

If they could make it with beautiful graphics but still have essentially a Sonic 1, 2 or 3 style left-to-right game then perhaps they might be able to pull it off. I don't know enough about the potential marketability of only a small number of characters, so wouldn't even want to comment on that.

I hope they can make this game, but like I say, I fear that the original games might not translate to today's gaming market well enough to be enjoyable. And the mini-Velvet cynic on my right shoulder is whispering in my ear that gamers these days are teh Stewpid, and would prefer to blow lots of things up rather than face taxing puzzles. Not that Sonic was particularly taxing in his early games, but you know what I mean.

Sadly, this bitch ain't holding her breath.

I can't see any later Gen Y and Gen Z gamers interested in playing with sprites. It will need to look modern to sell to anyone but the nostalgic and the fans.

Unfortunately it is all about the graphics these days. Story and gameplay went out the window in favour of volumetric lighting and high resolution shadow maps. And yet all games still look like crap! It doesn't matter if they're 2D or 3D. Rasterisation just doesn't cut it.

I wonder how many nostalgics and fans there actually are, though? I mean, for all the division in the Sonic fandom, how many would happily buy a game like this one? If only it were more provable that there were, maybe games like this would go ahead.

All things being fair, I seem to recall Megaman 9, a Game which took the whole idea of a "Retro" game to its logical extreme by essentially being an old, 8-Bit NES title, doing fairly well on the Downloadables market, so it isn't like there's no audience left anymore for 2D Games.
