I like a lot of generally goofy anime with big dramatic mood swings like "One Piece," "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor," "Saiyuki," "Fullmetal Alchemist," "Sailor Moon," "Trigun," and "Rurouni Kenshin," as well as flat-out crazy crap like "FLCL," "Ranma 1/2," "Dragonball," "Lupin III," and "Azumanga Daioh." I used to love "DBZ" and have started to enjoy it again after finding out how amazing the original Japanese actors and score were, but "Yu Yu Hakusho" is still a million times better (if you compare the two, they have a LOT in common and pretty much everything "DBZ" did, "Yu Yu Hakusho" did it better and with zero filler).
"His and Her Circumstances" was cute and "Death Note" had its moments (face it, ALL of which involved L), but I can't stand "Orphen" or "Naruto" (except for Rock Lee, that guy's alright) and I wouldn't touch hentai with a ten-foot clown pole. I've had a lot of people tell me that I should try "Rah Xephon," "Evangelion," and "The Melancholy of Haruhi" and maybe someday I will. As far as movies go, "Akira" kicks ass blah blah "Ninja Scroll" kicks Akira's ass blah blah Studio Ghibli rules the world; you've heard it before. As far as live-action adaptations go, live-action "Sailor Moon" is hahalarious, "Fist of the North Star" hahasucks, and "Oldboy" WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! (seriously, though, it's a cool movie, go watch it... and while you're at it, watch "Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma," it's creepy and its got exploding ninjas)

I like Akira, Princes Mononoke, Spirited Away... ect.
Hentai? I guess that depends. Normally, I see that the same way I see normal porn: Very sad. Nobody get paid well for those video productions (especially the camera crew), and in anime terms, it's all cel drawings, so it becomes even less... whatever. Now if we're talking just anime with an excellent story and good characters, but just has a lot of nudity, I can't imagine that bothering me as much. But I don't even touch hentai, so I don't even know on what levels they're in.
Believe it or not...

I would fire a nuke at whomever brought that atrocity into the world.
I think it's deplorable.
I personally do not enjoy the Japanese score (not to mention voice acting, but that's another animal). Why? Well, I believe it sounds dated and cheesy. In my opinion, Nathan Johnson and Bruce Faulconer did a much better job capturing the essences of the characters. I don't know anything about Yu Yu asdlfkjlasd, but I'll take a look at it.

Whoops, I suppose I should have mentioned that it was mainly the movies that I've watched undubbed (the newer dubs of which have these atrocious nu metal songs thrown in for Lord knows what reason). Still, you have a point that it is cheesy no matter how you slice it, but for me personally that's where some of charm is: I picked up "Lord Slug" on a larf and somehow actually got into it thanks to leaving it on subtitles. Still, when it comes to t.v. show you have a good point. It's hard to imagine Goku steamrolling Frieza to any other music.
As for "Yu Yu Gobbledygook," my suggestion is leave the dub on! It is only one of about 5 animes that I would say that about, but the English voice actors rock (two or three of whom are "DBZ" alums) and the score is left intact. Also, skip the movie "Poltergeist Report" unless you really get into the show; its a decent enough film, but mediocre when compared to the series in general.

Because I've seen that image on the cover of a yaoi comic before. I know of what I speak.
Of course I'd still hate it. Anime is animated at a slower frame rate, and the fluidity of movement diminishes. The animation becomes stiffer in general, and then we'd have to deal with mouth "flapping".
Anything that isn't already an anime should not be made into one.

Ahahahahahaa. I mean *contemplative* yes, yes I see.
(More proof that you don't have to have more than two lines to your credit to have fangirls who will draw you in porn.)

That actually depends on which anime you watch. Most of the stuff that makes it to the States or other countries other than Japan do have an obnoxiously slow frame-rate. Mostly this is because the Japanese are used to doing things on little to no budget. As a matter of fact, their budgets were so small that they would even do the animation first just to see if they could afford it, and then have the Japanese actors voice to that finished animation (which explains the lips "flapping"). That's one of the reasons why I hated Dragon Ball Z as a kid. (Still do.)
Other anime, especially feature length anime of the mid-late 80's (and some in the mid 90's) had budgets bigger than any animated film should ever have. Most of the animation in those larger budget animes have the standard of a consistent 12-frame-per-second animation speed. That's the animation speed of a Chuck Jones cartoon. And it' been argued that some scenes of big-budget anime even had an animation rate of 24 frames per second. That's the frame rate of a live-action film. And the lip "flaps" disappeared when they actually had a large budget, because they were confident enough to record the voice performances first and animate around them. (As it normally should be done.) Some of those anime titles include Akira, Spriggan, and Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion.
Akira had little to no lip "flapping". Some of the shots in Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion had some spectacularly animated scenes where they traced the movements of live-action footage (shot specifically for the film) frame-by-frame. And Spriggan just has some of the most beautifully animated gun/physical fight scenes in animation history (American, Japanese, or.... anywhere for that matter).

What about Ninja Scroll, Ghost in The Shell, Grave of the Fireflies, Wicked City, Golgo 13 The Professional, Fist of the North Star and others besides Akira?
And do you think Tentacle rape hentai like Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend gives the anime genre a bad name?

= general perceptions. And I'm not yet willing to say those perceptions are wrong on the whole.

I just gave examples of anime I have seen. Although, I did see Grave of the Fireflies. That was good.
I think hentai in general gives anime a bad rep in the States, simply because it kinda hits us all at once, whereas in Japan it might be a little more "under the table", as it were. You know, like adult store are in the States. They're separate and don't really effect the rest of the film industry. Whereas in most U.S. places I've been into that seel Japanese animation (F.Y.E. and the like), their hentai collection is as big and just as prominent as their selection of normal anime. And they don't have many of the greats like Ghost in a Shell, Akira, or any of the others you mentioned above. Although Best Buy generally has a larger collection of "normal" anime, but still don't have many of the greats.
I don't know about Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, specifically. From what I've heard, there seems to be more going on than just tentacle rape, hentai stuff. But, again, I haven't seen it.
EDIT - I don't mean to sound bitter, but, I also believe that the very fact that I get asked that question by everyone who discovers that I watch anime, and therefore may equate all anime with porn, proves that it effects the perception of the entire art form in a way that isn't entirely credible to the art form as a whole.

I've never been to Japan. But it's said to not be that uncommon to see people reading dirty manga on the subway/in public places. And the very fact that Anime companies just see dojin stuff as free advertising (and thus don't sue the creators and publishers of such, though in america people have to hide behind parody laws, and even that isn't completely solid). So I think while the separation does exist. It has as much to do with a slightly different take on sexuality in general as anything else.
