200 issues is a long way to come for a comic like Sonic The Hedgehog, who has seen more twists, turns, and games about hoverboards and tennis rackets then you can shake a stick at. However, despite some nasty turnabouts, Sonic The Hedgehog has always been more or less an escape for me I'll admit. I always looked forward to it, despite the lackluster plots or bad writing/art(I'm looking at you Ron Lim) over the years. Don't get me wrong...the comic has it's share of wonderful talent, especially the fans J.Axer and Dawn Best. They really began what would be something wonderful...the artful takeover of the fans.
Now, Ian "The Potto" Flynn has taken over writing chores for the book and I have say it has been more or less a step up. The stories overall feel more simple and streamlined than before, but then again....Sonic is a simple character in many respects. He's a hedgehog with an attitude (and loves chili dogs). However, I appreciated what Ken Penders and to some extent, what Karl Bollers added with the addition of Robo-Robotnik as the new main Robotnik which more or less makes sense (the old Robotnik was taken apart literially). Ken Penders is in part mostly responsible for the echidna mythology which is a big part of the Archie-verse and which lasted a good 32 issues.
However, that was the past and this is now...here we are, on the brink of the "Eggman Empire" falling apart at the seams and it's leader, now tired of Sonic winning all the damned time, bent on crushing him in his web with the Egg Tarantula. Sonic, remembering his fight with the Eggman in 175, goes on a spree enjoying his torment of the Eggman, getting to him and really causing the guy's brain cells to split in anger. Everything Eggman attempts to counter Sonic with doesn't work as the hedgehog easily keeps us and takes apart Robotnik's seemingly final creation.
Sonic continues his barrages of jokes that ultimately ends up with Robotnik shouting "I...HATE...THAT...HEDGEHOG!" in tears as Eggman ultimately falls in defeat...somewhat unaware of what he has done to Eggy, Sonic comes over to see if the Eggman is ready to admit defeat and then instead of admitting he goes "f-f-f..nggghhhh...AHHHHHH!!!" and we see his SatAM Robotnik eyes for the first time. Robotnik thens literially tears half his mustache off and falls to the ground in insanity, having rendered the Eggman hapless.
So instead of killing Robotnik, which would've been predictable anyway, Sonic ends up BREAKING THE EGGMAN....as Snively was more than happy to put it that way. So, as we can see, the good guys win again but...."IT'S MY TURN" Snively introduces the new rulers of the Eggy Empire to us...THE IRON QUEEN and her furry minions (which I admit, are cool lookin'). If you're not familiar with the Iron Queen, she's all the way from Sonic The Hedgehog#60...long green hair and a .hack lookin' specter.
Ratings Department-
Story-9
As far as milestones go, this is a significant one, and probably the most significant since 50 since Robotnik is affected in a major way...the poor guy is simply insane now. It's like death couldn't have been a greater gift for Eggman, now having to live with the fact that he CAN'T beat Sonic. Now, our little guy Snively has HANDED OVER command to the love of Internet life...which may or may not be a grand idea. I kinda like the idea of having a woman villian for a change. Let's hope she's far more dangerous than Eggy. The fight in this issue was awesome and significant....an insane Eggman going all-out to try and destory his hated enemy but ultimately fails in doing so.
Art-10
I have to say I love the art in this issue. It feels more fluid than Tracy Yardley's usual job and it looks like she put forth some effort here, especially into Eggman's tearing of the mustache and the big eye reveal. The coloring is awesome. Matt Herms did a great job.
Heart-10
People are happy---Robotnik's goin' insane---Sonic is showing regret for what he did by the end of the issue, which I didn't expect. I thought he'd be smirking at the fact that Eggy got what he deserved but this shows a side we don't see from Sonic much...one of regret.
Yeah, maybe I'm singing the praises for the issue but I'm just happy to see the Eggman go. He got what he did for bein' such a lame villian and now perhaps we can get someone who actually succeeds every once and awhile. Maybe the Iron Queen's second jab at the hedgehog will succeed where it failed the last time...
Overall Score:9.5

I also don't agree with the sentiment that Sonic should be treated as a simplistic character--which is one of the reason's why Ian's such a terrible writer--but to each their own I suppose.

Also for their 200th issue couldn't they have given us mmm maybe like 64 pages. I mean its kind of a big deal shouldn't we get something cool.
An7imatt3r is my XBL gamer tag. I can also be found on Steam by searching it as well.

Anyway, I really can't say I'm pleased about Sniv giving up the empire to her. I mean, wtf, really. He connives to bring Eggman down, just to hand it over to some chick? I don't care if he's 'in love', Sniv is smarter than that, and he also strikes me as one who's had to repress his emotions, not let them rule his decisions (otherwise he would've died long ago under Robotnik's fist over some angry, insolent outburst.) It's nice to get Egg out of the picture for a while, but why the hell can't Sniv be the one in charge?
Ian's writing for Sniv was one thing I actually liked! I liked how he made him humorous, but retaining that snarky, conniving, smile to your face, but stab you in the back lovely persona... He was almost on par with his SatAM incarnation at times, really. He gave him more depth in regards to the scenes with his stepsister Hope. And now it almost seems like, well, we've got Sniv.. he's always wanted to be in charge, he's been around forever... but hey! Let's dump the leadership role to some crappy chick who's only been in one stinking issue. Yeah, great idea... ><
But I might be overreacting a tad.

Then there's the fact that Julian was a lot more tactful as a dictator the Eggman. Julian managed to withhold his empire for 10 years in this, and Eggman, who had to take what he'd made, could barely hold it for so much as two. T
That's not to say that Eggman can't work as a villian, there are certain status quos he might work well in. But trying to make him a dictator like he is in SatAM, when he doesn't even have the maturity to conduct himself very well isn't very believable/is hard to conceptualize. I don't see why Eggman and Julian couldn't just co-exist and do their own things in this book. He's got so many relatives in it already, and the Potto posse were vouching for Eggman Nega, so dismissing Julian on the grounds of 'confusion' is hypocritical and absurd.

Seriously, what is it with these guys trying to sneak fleetway references in?

Because Fleetway was fucking awesome; even if the strips where too short upon reflection.
'Nuff said.

Because Ian Flynn has no originality?

I read the thing online but if I had it in my hands I would have set in on fire the moment I finished it.
Complete Sonic The Comic ripoff ending. Stupid excuse for an epic fight that should have been for such an issue. They keep treating stupid Archie-Eggman like he and Julian are the same and like he's ALWAYS been there. And the whole Iron Queen crap is doing exactly what they did after Sonic #50. Defeat the main guy and bring in the secondary villains to the spot light to try and make them have more fans. They screwed up Mogul(not that I've ever liked his filler-self), blasted Naugus to hell and back and since they are already full of new unoriginal characters they go and take the worst of those minor ones back to probably try and make them badass.
Well, I couldn't give a damn about the stupid queen that NEVER did ANYTHING before but giggle her cliche witch giggle and have bestiality fetishes with an Ox, who was also just as insignificant in the story because he got blown away with a fan and all he did was roar and drool.
First they kill off the most awesome thing of the comic, then fuck up what was left of the awesome, they attempted to replace the awesome with the current fad because the new fans knew nothing about SatAM and so Eggman was easy to sell as a familiar face, now they just took that very thing that gave them sells and broke it down into a screaming, crying, drooling mess and now they will be digging on the bottom of their crap looking for something the new, easily-pleased fans will enjoy because they have no idea how everything was nor any sense of originality and quality.
If you took offense with any of this, just remember this is the very biased opinion of a hardcore Robotnik fan.
Thank you and have a nice day.

But back to the Iron Queen, she will become trite at the rate she's going. She will be difficult to get after awhile into if only for the fact that she lacks the moniker and the appearance to make her immediately understood in terms of her relevance to the story. She isn't the kind of character who after awhile will be easy to get into unless you've been keeping up. This to me is another example of Ian at best trying to create a short term solution to a dilemma that is long term.
The whole issue...well...I thought is sucked. It was your typical pointless manfight that we get with every issue ANYWAY, Sonic with his cheesy comebacks beats Eggman and then Eggman has a bout of infantile insanity. It's trite because we've seen it before. Hello Fleetway, how've you been? The characters were totally OOC. Sal has to lock away a guy she cares about in Mecha Madness, and is emotionally screwed to tears by this experience but can manage follow the law
....except when Ian doesn't want her to. I thought this was just another example of Sally's stupidity but I've always been slightly uncomfortable with the assumption. Really when you look at how dumb she's been getting especially as Ian writes her, it's not characteristic of her at all. Leaving Eggman because he's thrown a tantrum and listening to his treacherous nephew instead of following the law? When she was suspected of treason only three issues ago?! I'm surprised more people don't complain about crap like this. Sally's personality shifts at the drop of a friggin hat but I guess if she's not on all fours taking it from a blue hedgehog it's ok if her characterization goes down the crapper.
I'm starting to think a lot of stuff is just done for short term. Sally's occasional bouts of utter stupidity, Regina, even Bunnie/Antoine's wedding. I've been meaning to say it but not only was the moment that led to it totally rushed, but it undermined that during the 1 year struggle, Bunnie needed to learn the lesson of self acceptance and the relationship she had to Antoine as a boyfriend only served to enable her constant fear of facing herself. That is to say, she constantly needed his reinforcement of her attractiveness without being able to have that sort of confidence for herself. A nice little wedding story (and I by nice I mean sarcasm) at the expense of Bunnie's overall development. I hate all the Archie pairings and when it comes to types like Ash/Mina and Bunnie/Antoine, the primary reason I can't stand them is because the guys in question are used to enable the fears and weaknesses in the girl characters without letting them face themselves. I really just hate it.
Issue 200 was perhaps the worst landmark because it really wasn't one. Hmm actually no it's 175 or at least tied with it to me. Plotholes to bring Sally back, losing their homes only to gain them back (which means no real losses) and Bunnie and Antoine getting married (yaaaaaay (not)). All big heaping pile of fail. But 200 really comes close. and for those of you who enjoy Sally and love Bunnie/Antoine, 200 would definitely be the suckiest landmark. The only thing different from Ian's typical filler issues was a complete ripoff from the works of other people and his introduction of a short term solution to a long term problem which means we should expect more fail in the long run, not light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe if Ian had more to offer in this story arc it wouldn't be so bad. I can understand looking at a story arc and trying to do more with it and to make the concept even better but...what is there? Notice how besides talk of Ian's Damaged Goods known as the Iron Queen, Eggman's insanity is the only thing anyone's talking about and even then that was bad. They could've alluded to it better too. We should've known why Eggman was broken. Foreshadow the decline by giving us a look into his head on occasion so we can see his steady spiral downward not rely on Sniv's uncharacteristically Mammoth Mogul length monologue to explain it all for us. Whatever happened to getting into the character's head and getting an idea of how they are? Monolouging, especially from another character's POV doesn't offer the same experience.
Marma I wouldn't burn it...well at least I'd wipe my ass with it first.

But it's already so full of it it wouldn't help clean but make an even bigger mess! Plus, I wouldn't want to have the feeling of that thing touching anything else beside my finger tips.
Too bad it left a mark in my fandom heart too. :/

"It's been 15 years!" and started retelling the things he did NOT do! That was Ian SHOVING into readers faces that THAT Eggman has been there all the time, that Robotnik and Eggman are one and the same. His eyes shouldn't have been red on black because he is HUMAN, He is not Julian, and he's not even Robo-Robotnik anymore. Robo-Robotnik's future went differently. How come he didn't mention Robotizicing Sonic before? That his Sonic actually croaked too!
Why can't he defeat him? Why he never could? Never?! He DID! When he was in his own dimension as Julian he destroyed every single living thing. He had won! And ended up alone as a consciousness on a dying spaceship so he got bored and came over here because Sonic lacked his Robotnik and he lacked his Sonic. But the moment he got turned into Eggman he started to get screwy, because of the damn writers of course, wanting to fully merge him into SEGA Eggman and wanting to forcefully ERASE all trace of the SatAM origins.
Why couldn't he win anymore? Because he lost his essence! Because the writers screwed him up! He lost his killing drive. He stopped having that desire to conquer and destroy. Robotnik's original desire was not to just get rid of that hedgehog, it was to conquer, or rather, continue to conquer what was left of the planet. He got Sonic obsessed when he got in the way or when he probably had nothing else to do and decide to try and find knothole and blast them away, but it wasn't his priority and thus the whole going mad thing just because Sonic broke yet another useless toy was completely OOC. It was like watching a bad actor playing Eggman! Just WTF?!
At least when they decided to get rid of Julian he went with dignity. He didn't go mad, he went out fighting.... HAND TO HAND! He kept his respect even after being gone (I'm purposely pretending that #108 does not exist)
Eggman sort of gave a drunken swing and started bawwing and seizing...
They've raped the character to no end. It would have better to have him die of a heart attack so he wasn't around anymore, but nooooo. Humiliate him even more by showing his strapped to a straight jacket and drooling and babbling incoherently for the next following issues. Just keep raping him slowly through the next whatever pieces of wasted talent and colored paper.
I suffered Julian's removal from the comic and disliked the reason he got replaced with even if I do love Eggman in-game. Then I thought they could still manage if they did a decent job with Eggman which they did at first while he was still vicious even if slightly comical, but he was still badass at points, but not even him. Ian has no respect whatsoever for this fandom. He just wants to make his fanboish vision come true and force it on everyone because now he has the power to make it "cannon". Wait for the fanchar villains or reusing of even crappier ones. Of course we still have the *choke*Egg Legion about with Dimitri plotting by himself. Let's see if Ian can remember his own continuity and make a senseful plot with them without forgetting what he had written before. It's like the guy makes things up on the fly without thinking much about it and changes his mind often. I feel like reading a fan comic... no, a HORRIBLE one, because there are many around that are so much better than this...this...thing!
I'm through with this comic. It broke down the last hopes I had for it along with Eggman.
PS. But you know, if I still want to find a bit of humor if only to not completely be heart broken....
The reason Eggman went insane was because Julian has been hiding about and whispering things, like what a huge failure he is and how he could never compare to his greatness, to his head in his sleep and so it was him who broke him and it only took Sonic to confirm it! >D
Forever obsessed and loyal Robotnik Freak, out.

I'm saying he could've alluded to it better though. Let's explore what Eggman's actually thinking throughout the downward spiral instead of a contrived monologue from Snively.
Well done soldier your tour is over. The cycle of suffering has ended and for one more person the path to enlightenment is sure to follow.
The thing I find most annoying is he's essentially lying about the continuity at this point (because as you said in 15 years he did experience an ultimate win in his original zone that makes that phrase faulty). He doesn't want to work with the continuity and if he suspects people are ignorant he just won't regard it at all. He could've just as easily reintroduced Julian and lied about the continuity to bring him in, but instead of getting an easily identifiable dictator villain we're going to get the Iron Queen who will at best only work for a short while. Why? I'm going to suspect its probably part of this whole games vs. SatAM war that some fanboys just can't let go of. He's perfectly fine with adding another Robotnik from another zone (or a family member) to ocassionally cause havoc just as was suggested for Julian but only if it's an Eggman from the friggin GAMES (NEGA).
Eggman wasn't the only one screwed this issue. He made Sally a complete and utter idiot. How can a fan of Sally just sit ad smile as his writing essentially rapes the characterization into making a complete and utter dumbfuck? She was a total ditz and yet ever so capable of leading the FFs. Again mecha madness demonstrated she should have the composure to weather him his epic tantrum.

"15 years" and "Yeah, the coup. I was like 5"
Did I miss Sonic turning 20 recently? Or is Eggman counting the date Sonic was born, or maybe couting his years as Robo-R but oh wait, didn't he forget that?
Just another WTF for Ian.

Also, some comments here are so immature. All I read is "waaaaah Ian doesn't write like I want him to do so he's incompetant". PLEASE! You may not like it (so, why do you still read it?) but this is ridiculous.

<yes, he was human. A crazy man can do whatever he wants to his body. Why do you think they focused so much on the eyes? To say "Hi SatAM fans"? Please...
Oh, also, didn't one of Julian's ancestors had those same eyes?

Thats stupid. Its kind of like asking us "you don't like Bush, so why're you in America?" Do realize some of us don't have much to lose by reading it because some people don't actually pay for it. I won't name any names. But all in all, even if people do read it, that doesn't mean they shouldn't criticize the book even if they do like it. I think that just stunts the potential of the book if you surround yourself with too many positive opinions.

Yes, because a KIDS COMIC BOOK is as SERIOUS BUSINESS as a country's politics
It's the same thing if you pay or read the scans: you still read it. It's like those people who "don't like reality-shows because it's stupid but watch them anyway".
As I said, you are free to dislike, but comments like this:
Marma I wouldn't burn it...well at least I'd wipe my ass with it first.

This is so...immature.
