It would work if the chaos emeralds were thought of in the same sense as power rings, an invention not magic. Find a way to introduce them in a logical way consistent with that of the rest of the SatAM universe and it would work. So to answer your question, it's just the way you choose to perceive it.

There's no solid proof that the power rings or the rock that powers the power ring machine aren't magic. There's a lot of overlapping and merging between magic and technology in SatAM.

To take it as seriously as everyone else it reminds me of FFVI. Magic and technology are clearly the theme of this era unless I'm missing something.
