I just watched "Sonic and Sally" and something is bugging me.  When Sonic "rescues" the Sally bot, why did the bot's camera go offline?  The bot's microphone still functioned, but why did the camera die?

Behind the scenes - Easy excuse so that Robotnik can't find Knothole.

Possible In universe answers - The Sally bot had to be a perfect replica of Sally.  Likely there wasn't the physical space or data for a high quality camera.

The camera was working until Snively's first attempt to roboticise Sally.  I guess something malfunctioned in the building, but how did it affect the Sally-bot?  Was the bot's power somehow tied to the Roboticsizer?

Like a Skype Video Feed Going out.  It likely just lost connection to Robotnik's servers.

So how does that work with Skype?  Is it a connection issue?

Skype is essentially a phone line for the computer. Just like a cell phone can lose connection with the towers/satellite, Skype can lose connection pending your internet connection. Occasionally due to bad connection, the Skype video feed may disconnect freezing the image but allowing the audio to continue. Usually the Audio will cut soon after but sometimes it reconnects.

So using Skype as an example, you would say that basically Sally's camera went offline but the audio was still connected.

I'll take a stab at this. I'll say part of the reason is that video has much higher bandwidth/throughput requirements for encoding and transmission than audio does. Take a look at the relative sizes of a 5 minute video file, compared to that of a 5 minute MP3. The video file is much bigger. Ever been watching a video on youtube or on a Skype call, and then a roommate or family member in the same house starts a big download, and your video quality starts looking like crap and lagging out as he hogs all the bandwidth? Similar issue.

When Snively first attempted the robotization process on Sally, the system overloaded and some equipment blew up, damaging the receiver system in Robotroplis that was tuned to replicant-Sally. Damaged, it no longer had enough bandwitth to successfully receive and decode the video stream from replicant-Sally. Since an audio stream takes far less bandwidth, that could still be received and decoded.

Another thought, was that perhaps the audio and video streams were separate systems entirely. Consider Robotnik's line after the system blew and Snivley said, "The video is gone, sir!": "The communication system still works." This is probably a good design anyway, since audio and video streams have different processing requirements, and each one could be optimized for it's particular task. A bonus is a degree of resiliency, as was observed in the episode; the failure of one system does not necessarily mean that the other fails as well. This seems to play well into the genre-savviness  that Robotnik exhibited in season 1.

I think have something here. In a logical and surveillance sense, it would be wise to have the audio on one setting and the video on a different one because if one were to go down you still have the other and then use what you gather to infer further.  Having both on the same setting then having both go out then you just wasted time and resources that could fall into the Freedom Fighter hands. At least having one active you can monitor and access situations and be able to gather valuable data and intel. It's a smart plan, but the bot couldnt fully pick up everything of Sally's personality which allowed Tails to figure it out. There's still some flaws in that system that could be ironed out

Both seem plausible; I like the separate systems explanation better.

Nice one, Koreth.  Video and audio as two separate systems.
