So you may have heard me say it before, (or not, I seem to be invisble for the most part here ) or maybe you've followed my signature link and found about it through my journals or artwork up on deviant art, but here it is again. I am working on an online comic for Satam, as the title says, dubbed "Sonic Quantum". Inspired by the likes of Sea3on, Ian Flynn's Other M, Don Bluth movies, and anime, it'll take after elements of all of them. I've made Sea3on (up to a point before things differ dramatically) the basis and foundation of the plot, where I'll be continuing sometime further down the road on an "assumed" plot path. From there on it'll cease to be familiar though. I liked the gritty, serious and high stakes nature of Ian Flynn's Other M, and most notably that fans of all art skill levels were helping to create the comic in contribution. One thing I'm unsure of however, is if Ian Flynn actually paid them to draw for the comic - I assume he didn't though. Combining the charm and nostalgic aspects of a Don Bluth film and the unpredictable elements that occured in classic anime, I hope to create one badass online comic.
A friend once came to me with a proposal to create a comic for him as a commission. This was way back when, where Ken Pender's lawsuit was still in the process and we still had some of his loveable characters (there aren't many as far as I'm concerned, sorry, had to let you know). At some point we decided there were too many issues going on, especially with how the reboot happened and all the ways Satam and the original Sonic games differed from eachother, and hence the division within the fanbase. We decided that we would:
a. Make this a contributory project that fans could help us both draw and write.
b. Combine all Sonic continuities in attempt to please most (cuz you sure can't please everyone)
c. Include other Sega Ip's to regenerate interest (and nostalgia) for all things made by that previously Iconic company
d. Possibly help make Satam/original Archie Sonic relevant again.
e. Replace or remake Ken Penders characters (also out of spite ) to not totally lose some of the more interesting ones.
Combining the Sonic continuities was a hard, ridiculous, tedious, convoluted mess, but we managed, with few glaring plot holes. In order to simplify it the most, we boiled it down to 3 major continuities, where we also planned to have dimensional crossover (in limited, non corny, non-contrived ways). Those continuities are as follows: Satam, for it's serious, dark atmosphere where most if not all actions seem to matter and the benefits can be seen, rather than the looping nature of most Sonic games where eggman shows up, causes trouble, gets his shit pushed in, comes back later; AOSTH, for it's comedic tone, where elements from classic comedy anime such as ebichu, excel saga, etc could fit in (sorry, the youtube poops were too good to pass up); and the OVA/classic sonic game 'verse', where there was pretty much a combination of everything + charm and mystery. Characters from Sonic Adventure, 06, and maybe even Boom will appear, and their backgrounds have been rewritten to fit into the other 'verses' as well. Also, in protest and spite of the Archie Sonic reboot, the plot will revolve around multiverses combining and distorting into chaotic forms (which be a bad thing y'all ) as opposed to them breaking apart.
We've also come up with designs as replacements for Ken Pender's characters - which were for the most part dull, flat, lazily designed palette swaps with tufts of hair thrown on to differentiate between them all - along with their backstories to boot. We've only managed to salvage the characters that stood out the most and were the most likable to people, ditching everything else. I'll post pics and stuff in a later post.
The Sega IPs included are as follows:
Skies of Arcadia
Toejam and Earl
Streets Of Rage
Space Channel 5
Jet Set Radio
Echo the dolphin
Now, just to be clear, just because they're listed here doesn't mean we're going to be swamped down with an assload of characters. This only means that the IP will make some form of appearance in the comic, be it a cameo, an advertisment, or some form of subliminal message. For example, there's less than a few things from Phantasy Star that we have planned to appear in the comic, one being the aero prism, a crystal that lets one see invisible things.
Here's where you come in: If you're interested in helping us write, draw for, or even just want to let us know what you think of the planned series or what you'd like to see in it, let us know! We don't care if the message is negative, possitive, insulting or whatever, we just want to hear from you about your thoughts. If you have ideas, or want to contribute, you can talk to us here, on IM, or even at Deviant Art on the sonic quantum group - and FYI, we don't hide comments or negativity on the group unless in cases of spammers trying to advertise or the occasional "block and run" types.
