Yes SatAM most most certainly was. I was of the target age range when Doomsday aired and that final moment between the two of them was cemented in my mind as canon, regardless of what has or will be written later. I understand the thought process in Sega's decision, but I think what they've done in the long run is make Sonic less interesting of a character and have made him stagnant.

Not really. The only "clues" we have thus far are only vague comparisons, such as the noticeably darker/serious atmosphere and the mention of a resistance.

 

Naturally, this has fans excited. But knowing Sega, they'll probably be using their current cast of characters instead.

I rewatched the trailer a couple of times. Actually, there's no telling that Robotnik/Eggman has already taken over. In SatAM he has rebuilt Robotropolis how he sees fit. However in the trailer we see a city in ruins, on fire. The city itself looks normal, not like it's been under Robotnik/Eggman's reconstruction. He wouldn't destroy his own city unless it's a collateral damage in battle with Sonic. However Sonic stands in the distance and rushes in to stop the giant bots.Taking this into consideration, I assume the giant bots in the distance attack the city itself, the civilians and any military force if there is one. That means that either Robotnik/Eggman only tries to take over the city (which not necessarily equals "the world" in the setting) or it could be merely a ploy to draw Sonic's attention. The resistance, that was mentioned in the trailer, might suggest an uphill battle with Robotnik/Eggman, who has either built a new advanced army of robots or has obtained a new source of power or joined forces with someone powerful or even just had enough time to build a lot of robots to get the upper hand by numbers.

 

The setting might be a peaceful kingdom that lived in prosperity until R/E came. The resistance might mean the random bold citizens of the city under siege that decided to fight R/E with Sonic, which serve just as quest hub/base filler, where you hang out between stages/missions and have story dialogs or whatnot.

 

OR it could mean what we immediately assumed - R/E has really taken over and as an unstoppable force is crushing the few remaining cities. Thus, not able to stop him outright, Sonic and the team (whoever that is) tries to gradually whittle down his empire and gather enough power/artifacts/chaos emeralds to engage in the final battle.

I Agree Nightmus We only have vague clues and your more than likely right on the topic of this being a first assault, but on the topic of your peaceful kingdom theory what if take it one step further and say that this is Mobotropolis? this would signify the start of the intro to the freedom fighters perfectly as described in SatAM but to further imply this theory is one nagging little tease/clue/hint in the teaser that stuck out to me, The Appearance of Classic Sonic. yes this may just be the anniversary appearance trope but when I see that scene and remember that this is to be a brand new game not a sequel or remake I get the thought that what if this is like the episodes from SatAM; Blast To The Past? I mean this literally screams that 2 parter entirely! what do you think of that idea it would make sense

I don't doubt that time travel will be involved somehow. but I can't imagine Sonic Team just now deciding to adapt the SatAM/Archie elements into the games. They've held their stance thus far so it doesn't seem all that likely, unless they're just that desperate to win back their audience.

I must say I never looked at it like that. A very interesting approach indeed! Even though LogiTeeka brings some down to earth rationale, I really like this theory. While I agree that Sega is unlikely to directly reference SatAM, they still could draw inspiration from it. They seem to look for new ideas each game, so why not try that one, which now and again is called brilliant in retrospective. If Sega puts some subtle hints, the game still might look like a completely new installment for the majority.

 

Maybe it's just wishful thinking. I really like King Connor Acorn's theory.

It's possible that they might take influence from the show. It wouldn't be the first time they did.

 

During the production of SA1, one of Eggman's concept designs bore some striking influences from the SatAM Robotnik. The idea was rejected, of course, but at least they showed some acknowledgment.

I'm glad you like my theory! and I agree with both of you because hey this is Sega we are talking about so they get to do what they want as long as they think the fans will enjoy it. and I really like that Robotnik concept art LogiTeeka! its a really evil looking and great design! When do you guys think they will give us new info on Project Sonic 2017? I think it will be E3 2017 but are there any other events you guys think they might release info or do you think they're just going to drop it out on the fly?

I recall reading somewhere that the game has been in development since "Generations", which was released about 5 years ago. If it's been in development for that long, they surly must have some gameplay to show off.

True. But that's only about a fraction of the duration. By now, they've probably got plenty of gameplay to show off for next year.

 

If this rumor is true, it would explain why Sonic Team relied on a different sub-division to help develop "Lost World".

Your probably right but with Sega being as hush hush as they are only going to give us like a minute of gameplay at E3 because this this from what i can tell their biggest project in years.

To be honest, I just can't see the Freedom Fighters in an official game (not 100% sure if I count Sonic Spinball or not.) As much as I love the characters, I've always accepted them as part of their own continuity within the cartoon (and Archie comics, who adapted them into the video game adaptation story lines.) It honestly doesn't bother me, I just see it as a separate world entirely and an alternate timeline/universe. I'd be very surprised if it actually happened. Any news like that I'd treat as a hoax unless there's some good, legitimate sources to back it up or until I actually see it for sale, and not on ebay either since I know people make and sell fan made games on occasion. 

 

Doesn't stop people from getting creative with mods and fan made games though, and those look like fun. 

 

Fear of another lawsuit is a possibility as well that Sega might want to avoid.

 

I get that Sega of Japan does have a tendency to be strict with how Sonic is treated in it's games, and while seeing more of the American influences come out would be nice, it's doubtful. (But hey, at least we got the chili dogs right?)

 

Honestly though, what kind of game play would the Freedom Fighters have? I could see some potential for Bunnie given she's got the robotic arm and legs. Rotor could be given a cool robot walker like Tails had in Sonic Adventure 2. Sally I'm not sure about, having her just run around fast like Sonic seems well...inaccurate for the character. It's cool in a fan game though. It's possible she could have some kind of recon mission where she has to collect items to further the story. Sonic Adventure did offer a variety of different game plays for the characters, so a format similar to that might work. Her game play could be similar to the custom character in Sonic Forces though, and give her some grappling hooks and other accessories she could use.

Well, I'll admit I do mix certain aspects of all of them into my fanfiction, but at the same time I treat it as it's own universe. But yeah, I do like seeing the different interpretations of Sonic, and beyond cameo appearances probably not. Cameos are nice little easter eggs, but I'd rather keep the worlds separate with the occasional cross over (with the intent of it actually being a cross over, TMNT I thought did that pretty well actually) and that's about it.

So unless they're going to make a new canon storyline that has a mixture of all the worlds, and do it in a way that doesn't feel forced, I'd rather just enjoy the different interpretations and continuities. I'm a SatAM fan, but I like the cartoon as is. I would have liked to have seen Knuckles in it, but a new, different approach to Knuckles instead of trying to force the games continuity into it. That's actually one thing about the comics I liked is that they did put their own spin on things, like how there were billions of Chaos emeralds instead of just 7, but they were hard to get to or found in zones.
