I am absoultely convinced JK Rowling is trying hard to stay relevant.

@  furrykef : (17 March 2019 - 02:30 PM)

I mostly just check in to validate new users and to zap spambots. Obviously, we get far, far more spambots.

@  randomizer : (17 March 2019 - 12:08 AM)

I pop in every couple of days but I don't really have much to say so I mostly just lurk.

@  wildfire : (15 March 2019 - 11:33 PM)

Not looking for anything particular here, but since we got people checking daily, I thought I'd point out that I posted a new topic in SatAM Chat. Show a guy some love and check it out.

@  wildfire : (15 March 2019 - 10:56 PM)

bout the same for me too. I honestly don't remember at this point.

@  Shadow : (14 March 2019 - 01:50 PM)

I been here since I was 14 years old.

@  John Roberts : (14 March 2019 - 12:39 AM)

I lurk, too. Sometimes. Maybe us seniors should just meet up at a retirement village.

@  John Roberts : (14 March 2019 - 12:38 AM)

Hiho Wildfire!

@  wildfire : (13 March 2019 - 10:39 PM)

It doesn't help that everything i post on dies. But seriously, I do try and poke my head in from time to time. FUS was family to me for several years. I doubt I'll ever truly leave.

@  Shadow : (11 March 2019 - 04:43 PM)

I did mention before on the idea of a monthly podcast channel.

@  ShenFNWoo : (11 March 2019 - 06:06 AM)

Yeah, it's that kind of thinking that keeps this place dead, mang :\

@  wildfire : (10 March 2019 - 07:42 PM)

I still pop in from time to time. I'm like a professional lurker. As a senior member I think its fair to say I've earned that right. ;) Miss you guys.

@  ShenFNWoo : (10 March 2019 - 07:18 AM)

Rereading that, a lot of that came out completely wrong. But then again, it is a shoutbox, I don't know what the max word count is on the thing.

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 07:25 AM)

As I've said many times before... IF the problem is that they themselves can't do it, then the guys running this place could possibly outsource in some form or fashion to people with more time to help work on this comic here. There's clearly people willing to pay for it, and even crowdfunding might be an option.

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 07:23 AM)

There's really nothing stopping us. All we have to do is want to do this stuff.

Dr. Phil once said bored people are boring. Why a clinical psychologist who admits that most of the problem is of a functional nature within a patient's brain would believe this, I don't know, but there IS truth to that. Those who can't find something to try to work with to have or make a good time are usually just devoid of character themselves.

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 07:21 AM)

I have a friend that's working on our game concept ideas who has major depression and horrible anxiety, 3 kids and a horrible job that takes up most of his day. He constantly gets on some of our team member's cases (even mine) about how there's 24 hours a day, and how Schwartzenegger's motivational speech can do wonders for us.

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 07:19 AM)

OR we can make our own sonic stuff, and put together something that could tide us over until the 'official' sea3on starts back up.

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 07:18 AM)

We're all here because we like Sonic. We want more of it. When there is no Sonic to speak of, we could EASILY branch off into other topics, and continue discussing that stuff instead.

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 07:00 AM)

Like, disagreements will NOT murder your world. You'll live. There were intense discussions that kinda just faded into dust. Most here seem to be polarized hard in either direction. People who're too conservative, and then those who swallow libtard nonsense regarding gamergate. And when disagreement that strong appears, people want it shut down. At this point, if I were running the place, I'd take any and all discussion

@  ShenFNWoo : (09 March 2019 - 06:58 AM)

And I'm not just talking about what happens with me. Nothing extracurricular around here gets much of any attention. People seem to be afraid to get their thoughts challenged, so they just get dissuaded from participating.

Hey everyone. I've been a longtime member, but kinda on the quiet side.

Before I explain the request in the title, I want to introduce who I am so that collectors can trust me on it - rest assured that I am in NO way asking for the art pieces to leave anyone's collections, however what I'm going to request might sound a little pie-in-the-sky without some background on me.

My name is Rory Joscelyne. I've been called Roareye Black in the Sonic fan community since 2001, and as part of the community I helped create and (for two years I ran and hosted) the Summer of Sonic conventions in London for Sega Europe - the event that eventually inspired the creation of the Sonic Boom events in the USA. I was also involved in the first meetups between fans and Sega back in the mid-2000s. Here is footage of me on stage at SoS 2013 with co-host Adam Tuff.

More recently I have begun work in the film industry and among many other areas of work I have been developing restoration techniques and learning about various forms of media such as compositing (which is a huge part of animation). I have already begun work in this regard on the Super Mario Bros movie, having restored two of the film's trailers into genuine 4K with fresh scans of the film negatives ( https://www.youtube....h?v=_oCgefJDilg ) and have begun work on a follow up documentary with the team called Trust The Fungus. My IMDB has all these (and other unrelated work) covered as proof - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm9247396/
You can also check my website at www.roryjoscelyne.co.uk , and you can verify all of this on my Twitter and Facebook profiles if you like.

So now I've introduced who I am, I'll explain what it is I am trying to do. I would like to try and restore Sonic SatAM into 4K resolution, not an upscale, not a fan re-interpretation, a full on restoration of the original show into higher resolution video. I have several plans in mind for the animations, as locating all of the animation cells may be impossible (from what I have read, most are locked in a vault in Sega of Japan) but by design animation cells are basic in colour detail etc - so I have something in mind on that front. However the background paintings used in the show would be damaged by these techniques due to the level of detail the art team put into them, blurring out details and making them look like very basic posterised artworks - a real loss of quality.

So my plan is to get high resolution scans of all the backgrounds I can - from collectors who hold the original cels - and use those new scans to meticulously re-edit the show's post-production without losing background detail. I have a computer that is more than capable of this, and I have the skills necessary. All I need is a copy of the artworks (without character cells overlaid if possible).

I am not asking anyone to post anything to me, these artworks are precious and I do not need the physical item to do what I need. What I am asking is if collectors could step forward, find a local shop that can do high resolution scanning - professional level art scans - and tell me the price for the scans. I do not mind paying for the scans, as I understand collectors won't want to be out of pocket, however there isn't a set budget so please let me know what you have first so you don't waste money scanning backgrounds I already have scanned.

Once I have the backgrounds I can pinpoint which episodes they are in and begin matching the original video negative in terms of animation/camera movement and then overlay the digital animation cels over the top. This will produce a genuine 4K restoration of the series without resorting to cheap tricks or any loss of detail (In fact, a much higher rate of detail). It will also end the motion blur visible on the pan-and-scan motions of the DVDs which are currently the highest quality versions of the show.

Sorry it's a long post, but I thought I best make my intentions clear. With the help of fans I honestly believe we can restore SatAM to a high resolution program. The show itself is worthy of restoring, and I have the skills to do it, but I don't have the painted backgrounds to complete the job. I look forward to hearing from the community, as I'm sure you agree it'd be awesome to see SatAM in it's true best quality from the original art masters.

Wow, thats very interesting to hear!
I dont know how many people out there have these cels but as you say sega have most of them stashed away somewhere in Japan.

A 4K restoration would be awesome, perhaps the easiest thing to attempt would be the opening intro.

I think its going to be a very difficult task to do this without the original backgrounds to scan, so im guessing tracing over what scenes you have available from the DVD on a graphics tablet would be the easiest thing to do.

In other words you would be having to rebuild from scratch but drawn digitally.

TBH, i think most efforts should be made into putting together a season 3 in 4K.

If DiC/Cookie jar still have the original 35MM film, it should be easy for them to do a 4k Telecine of SatAM, like they did with the DVD release.
