I'm more surprised about the Fatal Fury character.

@  Wulfsbane : (06 September 2019 - 08:00 AM)

Really wasn't keen on the idea of Sans being playable, but I guess he's in the same vein as Ness/Lucas

@  Wulfsbane : (06 September 2019 - 08:00 AM)

I think it works.

@  GamemasterAn... : (05 September 2019 - 06:53 AM)

Okay, I was fine with the conversation naturally derailing to this point but this has turned into a full blown debate and is no longer about the IDW Sonic Comic.

Please take it to the debate section guys or bring it back on topic.

Hmm, just from hearing the discussions from this topic I guess I am glad I haven't been part of the Archie reboot or the IDW series.  A problem I have with video game comics in general is that they try to tie in a games' storyline into the comic's.  Archie did this plenty of times, and despite only being familiar with the early issues I will say that the video game references seemed forced upon the main continuity of the main comic series.  There is nothing wrong with using the game's story as an arc in the comics, but I feel writers need to do a better job at tying the plots into a more cohesive bigger story.

That's actually what the reboot did better than the original continuity, in my opinion. The old universe felt like a relic that tried to carry the legacy of SatAM but the burden of different writers and alternating directions enforced by SEGA forced the comic to become this weird hodgepodge of ideas that never really seemed to gell together. Sure, there was plenty of material to draw upon for extensive lore and such, but it still felt like a confused mess.

The reboot, on the other hand, had a much more consistent tone with what it was trying to be - an expansion of the world presented in the games with some SatAM/Archie lore added in to complement the worldbuilding. And while it wasn't 100% canonical to the games, it still felt like the world you would've wanted to have seen explored further in the series. And as someone who grew up with the games (primarily the Dreamcast/Gamecube/GBA era), this got a lot of nostalgia outta me.

After reading the newest issue currently, I am getting very frustrated by Ian's writing. He knows how to set up a good first and second act for a story arc, but absolutely blunders it in the last act. He seems to write his villains as being successful and intelligent, yet writes himself into a corner with the only way out is for them to do something stupid out of left field to give Sonic and friends the win. Like when Naugus got juiced with the master emerald, and decided to step off it and take a nap instead of finishing off his enemies. Or this new arc where for some reason Neo Metal Sonic lost his super form when he transformed into Overlord mode, despite still having the master emerald glued to him.

Yeah I have said a few times that Ian can start an Arc out really well but he sputters out towards the end. I'm starting to question if he fully plans everything out before he goes at it and if he does is he changing his mind halfway through. If this is how Ian is going to continue, I would be worried if he writes a game and does something like this there too.

I've seen a lot of people defending this by saying "well you can't have the arc being too long (a la SWC)." Which, yeah I agree, you dont want it to drag on for too long but at the same time the way they built up NMS & NMO for the both of them to be defeated in one issue each seems really weak.  With NMS/SNMS you had something really interesting but now I'm just gonna think "Well they just need to stall until Shadow gets there so he can 1 shot him" going forward.

Could have extended the arc by 2 issues, make the fight last longer with them trying to come up with a better plan then executing it...  I doubt you would have had a lot of complaints at the end.

Yeah, We all know Sonic will win in the end but raise the stakes a bit and give us the impression that he might not win this time.

If it was me I'd have had Metal Overlord keep the super form but push him so that his mechanical body would overload after an extended period and blow himself up, with Neo Metal shedding his large form and finish him with Tails ramming the ship into him and crashing into the sea with a nice explosion.

Nah. Readers still would've complained that Neo Metal being defeated by his own power and getting crushed would've been anti-climatic.

Well that's the problem with chaos emerald super forms. They cannot be overpowered or outmatched, so the only option is to run the gauntlet until they get tired like in the games when the rings drop to zero.

Rather have NMS be defeated by the power he couldn't handle than Shadow one-shoting him

Given how robots like Mecha Sonic had no issue in achieving a Super form via the Master Emerald, wouldn't Metal Sonic also have a similar capability?

Maybe later on. Could easily show here that he doesn't know how to handle it.

Plus adding the Master Emerald could overload him

Issue 11: The Resistance may have struggled against the Master Overlord, but in the end, they defeated him and saved Angel Island. But one question remains: Who is Dr. Starline, and what does he want with Eggman. Sure he isn't changing him back to normal for nothing.

In hindsight, how would NMS know about Rough and Tumble? Did Starline know about their taking over that one village back in Issue 3?

Anyway, I'm going to read the Team Sonic Racing one-shot soon. It released way sooner than I thought it would (in a good way).

Did anyone else picture Starline with a German doctor accent? I kinda pictured Richtofan's voice from BO1.

Anyone found it odd that Starline didn't bring back Eggman's memories, but Eggman touching Metal Sonic did? Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I feel like this is SEGA telling IDW that the comic characters must always be inferior to the game characters. Then again, Tangle and Whisper are getting their own miniseries, so I could just be overanalyzing it.

I’m pretty sure it was just because Eggman is much more attached to Metal than he would be anything else ^^

Probably not much to do with Starline being inferior in any way.

Well, Starline hasn't gotten much spotlight time outside of Eggman, but there's still plenty of development room for him as a character.

I'm just saying that it feels like SEGA don't want the characters in the comic adaptation to outshine characters from the Sonic games in any way, shape, or form. It feels like what happened with Archie Sonic later on, how the game characters got more focus, and the comic book/cartoon characters were just supporting characters. They even got rid of Snively and Lien-Da to replace them with Orbot and Cubot simply because they're in the games.
