I know I mentioned this in my intro comment, but I figured this deserved it's own thread so I can post updates for y'all.

I'm currently working on a Sonic SatAM RPG and am making fairly regular progress on it. You can follow the work in detail on my developer blog: https://satamrpg.blogspot.com/

 

Community input:

 

I'm looking for ideas on SatAM lore that opens up the possibilities for RPG elements without seeming too alien to SatAM.

 

  • One idea I had is to lean more into the natural world vs technology angle, and have the characters be able to harness elemental powers by way of power rings or "earth crystals" (As was referenced in the Ultra Sonic episode). This is sort of what the Archie comics have hinted at, like when Sonic faced Ixis Naugus as "Ultra Sonic"
     
  • Another idea would be to have a "Mobian Gods" mythos (Also something Archie toyed with). This would involve having archetypes that map onto the main characters (Sonic, Sally, Bunny, for instance) and each character is trained by some sort of old sage in how to harness particular powers associated with a Mobian God (Sonic would be speed, Sally would be intelligence, and Bunny would be strength?)
     
  • I haven't read much of the Sea3on comic, but I assume that there may be other ideas from that as well

SatAM already had a strong nature vs technology theme, but with the twist that technology wast inherently bad, as the freedom fighters use their own tech. I would recommend going that route as it is more fitting.
While there is mystical aspects, Sonic himself seems to not understand or like it. It wouldn't be impossible but it be less fitting to try and impose Mobian Deities and magic.

I recall many years ago I was involved in a SatAM RPG project that never got off the ground because of nobody wanting to come up with new ideas feeling it would fly in the face of the established lore.

Yeah I was waffling on these ideas, as I tend to be somewhat of a purist myself. I think I will avoid adding any explicit magic or elemental abilities at this point then.

Well if you're doing RPG you have to have it. You don't want it to be like the Dark Brotherhood game.

Not necessarily. You could replace magic with technology or special moves. Instead of MP, have Tech Points or TP. Or use items that give you spell like abilities such as a laser that shoots electricity or a mega muck launcher.

Could be like Dragon Age where Warriors/Rogues have Stamina and mages have Mana. Have it tailored to certain characters

Can't zoom in on the pictures at work so it may just be my phone, but the floor tiles look weird. They look soft somehow.

I would try to vary the floor tiles a bit but other than that it looks good

I really enjoyed playing your demo. Its exactly what a Satam RPG could have been back in the day. 

 

Pros:

-Great sound design from the recreated music to the sound sonic makes when running 

 

-Switching between the characters unique abilities is fun and and well integrated into the level design

 

-The critical hits in battle by tapping at the right time adds more interaction

 

Cons:

-The button presses didn't register all the time, and pressing the Escape key needs a popup confirmation before exiting the game completely

 

-The healing item gave too little HP back to bother with

 

 

I was ready to play more. Keep up the work.

Yeah some of those collision bugs make me sad. I might do a bug and polish pass in the next few days before the SAGE booth is locked down. Good point on the HP gain from Green Leaf, I'll update that. Really good point about the escape key.

How about a "Summon" that only works outdoors when the character whistles for Dulcy? She then swoops down and damages all of the enemies! You can use it once per bout but only while outside of the buildings.

A similar "Summon" could be achieved by calling in a request with Uncle Chuck to sabotage a hover unit to have it malfunction and crash into the enemies!

Antoine could be a playable character too. He could use his fencing sword to attack enemies. Outside of the fights, he could pick locks or press difficult or far buttons with the fencing sword to open doors, disable traps, or lower shields!

And heck, why not Rotor as well? He can disassemble mechanical or electrical things with his tools in the environments, and in fights he could throw wrenches or clobber enemies with them!

I don't know if this is still relevant, but I remember years ago there was a Sonic fanpage that mentioned a Godess called Destiny. She was a white echidna, but beyond the name and art I don't remember any other details. I recall she was used by a few fanfiction authors I read in high school. I built a simple pantheon around her years later for a Chaos Emerald idea I had. It consisted of the goddesses Destiny and Order, and their brothers Chance and Chaos. The four of them contributed to the creation of the Chaos Emeralds, with a gem named for each of them, the remaining three were represented by the Degrees of Awareness, being Intelligence, Spirit, and Courage.

I don't know how useful any of that may be to you. But I thought I'd try and contribute.
